Warner bros announce superhero films through 2020

We're just spoiled by movie slates from other studios I guess. Where any changes that occur are because of unexpected aquisitions from other companies that say "you guys print money, please help us", and not reactions to everything else under the sun that scares them even just a little bit.

As for Shazam, yup, that him! With proper lighting and everyrhing, it will look great I'm sure.

Not right away, at least. They haven't cancelled it, just slowed down while they reconsider it.

There are things involved that a studio probably can't keep quiet for long, like casting, hiring, reserving release dates, location scouting, etc. Journals like Variety and the like keep a close eye on the film industry and would note new activity, so keeping things secret would just generate more questions and stupid rumors.

Maybe if they tried to keep everything a secret indefinitely, but I think you're underestimating the level of control that's possible. Marvel phase 3 ends next year and the only hard information we have on phase four is 'Homecoming Sequel' and 'Guardians Vol. 3'. Marvel has also actually released every film they've announced up to this point, although Inhumans can be considered a technicality (but we also all know that's because the only person who actually wanted to do that movie was forced out). Meanwhile DC announced movies four, five even six years in the future only to see them land directly in development hell. There's no particular reason they couldn't have kept quiet on some of those titles a while longer.

Okay, so how does a studio know in advance which films are going to go smoothly and which are going to be problematical? They can't.

This is just one of those things that happens in the movie industry. It always has been. Laypeople only perceive it as a problem because they don't realize how commonplace it is for a film in development to have false starts, postponements, etc. (For instance, Paramount went through 2 or 3 aborted Star Trek movie projects and an attempt at a sequel TV series before finally making Star Trek: The Motion Picture.)
 
I think it looks really good considering it's an out of context set photo. Apparently the suit is based on "Justice League: War" the animated film based on Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's "Justice League: Origin". Probably also based on Alex Ross's art work as well.

All people are doing, as they do with the comics, is comparing Marvel to DC.
Marvel announces movies, every one of them will get made (except, as mentioned above, the Spider-Man trade with Inhumans).

WB/DC reacts by announcing their ambitious slate, and doesn't come close to what Marvel did.

It may be commonplace, but Marvel gives the impression that it isn't.

Marvel Studios is unusual, because the whole studio specializes in doing one thing -- the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So all their resources are directed toward that exclusive goal, and that lets them maintain a tighter focus. But Warner Bros. is a studio that has many franchises to deal with. DC Entertainment may be a distinct branch of it, but it's still answerable to the WB execs and its film slate is part of the larger slate of the studio. So it's more subject to the vagaries and pressures that affect films in general.

I do agree that the WB executives are far too quick to panic and shuffle their plans whenever a DC movie doesn't do well, and that they've made a lot of bad decisions about the DCEU from the start. But they're actually a more typical feature film operation than Marvel Studios, so I'm reluctant to compare the two as if they were equivalent. Looking at the big picture, most studios' attempts to create "cinematic universes" have been failures, because they don't have the advantage of the exclusive focus that Marvel has.

One thing I'll give DC/WB, at least they haven't given up after the first one or two movies. Maybe they should have rebooted, but they've stuck with it and kept trying to improve, and it looks as if they may have more success with standalone, solo-hero movies than with their big teamups. Wonder Woman was great, the advance buzz about Aquaman is promising, and Shazam! is such a massive tonal departure from the grim Snyderverse that it's bound to offer something new, at least. So if they manage to learn from their mistakes and put out some decent-to-good standalone movies in the years ahead, I'll take it.

Wow, that episode where Chuck cosplayed as "Shazam" certainly didn't spend much on the costume, and based it on the shit Geoff Johns version of course. But, since it was just a d-list show on NBC, I guess I can't blame it for putting almost no effort into the suit and basing it on whatever crap they saw in some comic they grabbed off the shelf at the time.

Seriously though, its like the people who made the 90s Flash suit were given an issue of Geoff Johns JL book for reference and then told to make the suit with a budget of $2.

There really is no pleasing you is there. They change the costumes and you complain that they didn't stick the comic design, and now we get one that is an almost an exact recreation of the comics' costume, and you still complain.

Isn't it the same with Marvel and Disney? Or is Marvel separate from the rest of the Disney movie studios?

Marvel Studios existed before Disney bought Marvel Entertainment. And Disney just let it keep doing what it was doing. It's a separate studio from Walt Disney Pictures.

On the other hand, the DC movies were originally just a production banner under Warner Bros. It was only in 2016 that DC Films was organized as a separate production company within the WB family.
 
OK, I thought once Disney bought Marvel then Marvel Studios was swallowed up by Walt Disney Pictures.
I actually didn't realize they did separate DC Films into it's own studio.
 
Kristen will be great if she completes her deal. She can also write as well if Patty and Geoff need her to. I think it's a great out of the box choice.

@JD Marvel Studios was started around 1998 by Avi Arad. Kevin Fiege was his protege and worked as I believe Vice President of Production...until just before "Iron Man" and Avi decided to step down and Fiege took over as head of Marvel Studios. He reports directly to Alan Horn as of the corporate restructuring that he apparently engineered because he no longer wanted to deal with Ike.

Kathleen Kennedy of LucasFilm also reports to Alan Horn. Horn in return reports to Emperor Mouse himself, Bob Iger.
