Which does make sense for Batman and served Tim Burton well on the Michael Keaton movies. Then there was the more subtle neurosis of Christian Bale in the Dark Knight trilogy. But, yeah, giving the side-eye to the very idea of Superman really undermined Man of Steel & Batman v. Superman.
Personally, I'm not very familiar with Batgirl in a solo context. I've only ever seen her as a supporting character in various Batman stories (the Adam West TV show, the 1990s cartoon, the abominable Joel Schumacher movie, The Lego Batman Movie). So, if you asked me what, apart from gender, would distinguish a Batgirl movie from a Batman movie, I'm not sure I'd have an answer for you. In that vein, I wouldn't be able to tell you why they should make a Nightwing movie either. I'm not disparaging the fans of either of those properties but I certainly understand the mindset of not knowing what to make of them.
Meanwhile, if Joss wants to work on a damaged female hero, maybe they could attach him to one of the bajillion Harley Quinn projects that they supposedly have in development.
And if we're looking for a female director to take over Batgirl, I nominate Rachel Talalay. She's done some stupendous work on some of the absolute best Doctor Who episodes of the last few seasons. She's also at least a little familiar with the DC universe, having directed episodes of The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, & Supergirl. She's more than earned her penance for Tank Girl.

Well, like I said, she's very different from Batman in that she isn't driven by personal tragedy. She's a cop's daughter, she wants to fight crime, and she does it using the methods of her father's ally Batman, because it's cool and exciting and lets her help people. Basically, she's a Batman fangirl who becomes a hero because of it. She's also really smart, a computer expert with a photographic memory -- qualities that come into play a lot in the "Batgirl of Burnside" comics in recent years, and of course were important during the years when she was paraplegic and operating as Oracle, the information broker to the superheroes of the DC Universe.
Nightwing has developed in his own distinct direction too. I said that what made Batgirl work was that she didn't have the same tragedy that drove Batman. What makes Dick Grayson work is that he did have the same formational tragedy as Batman, but he grew up happier and more well-adjusted than Batman, because he had Batman/Bruce taking care of him as a father figure and making sure he turned out better. So Nightwing is like Batman, but healthier and kinder and funnier. And also sexier. It's become a running gag among comics writers and artists in recent years that Dick Grayson is the sexiest, most irresistible male superhero in DC-dom, especially when viewed from behind.

I'm assuming WB is thinking about a Barbara Gordon film. (There are interesting angles to play with Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, but it's Barbara that the public is familiar with.) One angle they might be thinking about with Barbara is the "Batgirl of Burnside" angle -- Barbara Gordon is a grad student, living in a gentrified, hipster community not unlike Brooklyn or Portland. The other angle would be the 1970s "Congressman Gordon" angle -- Barbara Gordon was elected to Congress, and she legislated by day and fought crime in DC by night.
Personally, I'd love a Congressman Gordon Batgirl movie.

Why do they even announce a movie slate. Keep that stuff quiet until there's a trailer or at least cameras are rolling, then we'll be excited. Until then, there's little point in believing anything WB says except for a Wonder Woman sequel and what is already filming now.
It looks exactly like Captain Marvel/Shazam's costume should look. He's a kid's fantasy of what a superhero looks like.
Not right away, at least. They haven't cancelled it, just slowed down while they reconsider it.
There are things involved that a studio probably can't keep quiet for long, like casting, hiring, reserving release dates, location scouting, etc. Journals like Variety and the like keep a close eye on the film industry and would note new activity, so keeping things secret would just generate more questions and stupid rumors.

That has always been true. Remember "Comic Scene" Magazine? In the back of every issue they had a list of every comic book adaptation in any stage of development. Even if no movement was made for years. I was 11 when Batman was released in 1989. After its huge Box Office success almost every main DC hero was listed. Very few that ever were made, until recently. (I distinctly remember Aquaman and Justice League listed back than)
I am not sure it's Warner Bros fault or really the online fandom that does not understand that. Shazam! Is finally getting made. The suit perfectly is appropriate for the character. But that is a big difference to Cyborg or Lobo which are basically names on a list until greenlighted.
