Warner bros announce superhero films through 2020

The conspiracy is real

I cannot bear the secret any longer. Guys, you were right. You who complained that the media was somehow prejudiced against DC movies were right. You who thought that Marvel/Disney was paying off critics to praise their movies while slamming DC’s were right. You were always right. And now I must confess: there is a secret conspiracy to destroy DC’s live-action movies, and I have been a part of it.

Hail Hydra

And that's exactly what's too reductive. The question is not about what the character is "doing." Again, any given storyline for a character can be handled very differently by different filmmakers. You're trying to reduce the question to a single variable, but there are many different ones that go into making a film work or fail. The character's actions are the least of it. If the filmmaker doesn't understand why the character would perform those actions, if the filmmaker doesn't respect the character's worldview and tries to show it as fundamentally futile or invalid, then that filmmaker's depiction of those actions will be completely different than if they were depicted by a filmmaker that understands and respects the character and his ideals.

As for what doing a Superman-style story right looks like, go turn on your TV and watch Supergirl. That's just about the best Super-universe screen adaptation I've ever seen.

"...and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a neverending battle for truth and justice." Seems pretty clear-cut to me. (The "American way" thing was only added during WWII, and revived for TV in the Red-scare '50s.) Superman is the archetype of superheroes. His goals are the most basic and universal goals you can get in a heroic narrative. It's not complicated to define.

The problem is when the people put in charge of making a Superman story are too cynical or jaded to have faith in such straightforward Boy-Scout heroism and feel they have to deconstruct it or apologize for it. This is why Supergirl works -- because it believes in its hero's basic optimism and demonstrates why it's valid and valuable.

You are right about those things. Too many writers and creative minds approach Superman with him "needing to be fixed", instead of writing the character as established. Take the most recent and now infamous Superman arc, Truth. Where Supes had shaved his head, dumped the costume for blue jeans and a t-shirt, and used his tattered cape to wrap his fists. Yang and Pak said they were inspired by MMA fighters and wanted to give Superman a tough guy look and attitude. Truth was apart of DC's short lived "DCYou" brand, that was intended to be a jumping on point for new readers and a face lift for existing characters. Along with Starfire, Cyborg, Black Canary, Superheavy Batman and Batgirl of Burnside. Without getting into the details Truth failed with fans, and didn't live up to it's own premise (can Superman lose his powers and still be true to himself). In typical DC fashion, they decided to cut all ties to Truth, the New 52 Superman and replace him with Superdad (pre-Flashpoint / pre-New 52 Supes). The move as you could imagine was to get back to a traditional take on the character, after pushing it too far in the wrong direction. A Superman who is still a journalist, and not an internet blogger and website coordinator, like the New 52 Supes was.

I haven't watched all of Supergirl, but I plan on buying digitally when it goes on sale.

I would like to see more of Superman's abilities returned to him however. Since the 80s Superman's resume list of skills and traits has been dialed down to give other Justice Leaguers more to do. Batman is the smart and tech savvy one. Despite Superman coming from an alien society and having alien tech at his disposal. Ray Palmer is the physicist and man who can build impossible machines. Flash is the forensic scientist and has the deductive reasoning skills second only to Batman. Hal has an unlimited imagination. Wonder Woman is allowed to play diplomat and be the political figure of the League. Also she's the best fighter on the JL. While he isn't called Captain Marvel anymore, Shazam is still Earth's Mightiest Mortal. Followed by Superman in second place. Superman doesn't need infinite power like he had in the Silver Age, but give the man something that doesn't involve his megaton fists and invulnerability.

IMO, an Apokolips story is long overdue in movies for supes, but better not to include the word in the title if it happens, because of the X Men.

Judging by the impact it had, by the time JL2 comes out nobody's gonna remember X-Men:Apocalypse.

Also in that thread, I posted a link to a rebuttal article which basically debunked that letter.

I'm not a fan of Liman. His movies tend to be grey and dull. Bourne was a fluke. I think Sam Mendes would be a better choice.

Yeah, not sure I categorise Swingers, Go, and Edge of Tomorrow as "grey" or "dull"

Sure, like most directors, he's hit and miss with the material he chooses, but he is one of the more interesting directors out there, and with decent scripts he pretty inventive, typically with a strong emphasis of characterisation over spectacle.

He's a good choice for a Superhero flick director and after the critical mauling that SS received, it's interesting to see DC/WB double down and go for another untested group property. Wonder when they are looking for a release date because (a) Liman already has himself booked for other films and (b) the 2018-2019 slate is incredibly overstuffed already.

Good choice from me and the current script is by Del Toro, who is an uber fan.

Hugo - we shall see

Wow. So Liman leaves Gambit (and 20th Century Fox) and joins JLD (and Warner Bros). Fox must be in shambles with their super hero properties.

Sorry? How do you get from one single move like that to a conclusion about the entire studio slate? Directors move between projects all the time. Maybe WB just offered Liman more money, or he was just more interested in that concept.

Along similar "thinking" I am sure the human race will soon be extinct. Many of us are dying each and every day. I am certain this a new phenomenon. ;)

Well, Gambit has been a troubled production for more than a year now. It has been something that Fox (or rather Lauren Shuler-Donner) has been talking up since 2011 (when First Class came out). With Fan4stick flopping, X-Men Apocalypse under performing and now another set back to the Gambit solo, things don't look too good for Fox.

Not a big deal though. Sony's Spider-Man plans have also been in the gutter. TASM series cancelled, the Venom, Black Cat, and Sinister Six movies all cancelled. The deal with Marvel is the only thing they have to put a shot in the arm back into their IP.

Also, the timing of the information is amusing. Director leaves Gambit under Fox and goes to helm JL Dark under Warner Bros. Like he had this planned out for weeks now.

I think Flash against a crew of minor villains would be more interesting than going up against one mega-villain. It would mean (hopefully) some clever plotting (if their actions are coordinated, that would make it harder for Flash to stop them), and a nice mix of characters, as opposed to the usual generic CG punching bag.

My only proviso would be to make sure to flesh out each villain, as opposed to the patchy character development we saw in SS.
