That's like those women laughing at the people drowning that one time I went to see Titanic, 11 years ago.

    Man, that was disturbing.

You can never be sure if someone is laughing at something serious happening on screen right at the moment they laugh, so sometimes it's misguided to assume that. For example, I remember an incident that occurred watching "Schindler's List" in school in about the fifth grade (I think). We were watching the scene in which the commandant gets up in the morning wearing his undershirt, pants, and suspenders, and there is a naked woman in his bed. This was one of the first times I saw a topless woman in a movie and my first reaction was to giggle uncomfortably, but instead, I held it in.

Unfortunately, I ended up letting out my delayed giggle just a short while later in the scene where the guy starts shooting Jewish prisoners at random with his sniper rifle just for the hell of it/target practice! One of the students told me he "lost respect for me" after that, but fortunately my best friend in the class (whose opinion was more important to me anyway and is still my friend to this day) figured I was laughing at the breasts and forgave me for my apparent insensitivity. :)

Are nasty epithets so easily dished out for fellow members of your gender a hallmark of feminism?

I agree. The opening sequence was loaded with bathos, in my opinion, and, to me, is just one in a myriad of things wrong with the mindset behind this picture.

Maybe she was laughing at the ridiculous alien with biker tattoos that sits on a throne in space and carries a spear.

That's probably it. There are a lot of people, especially women, who simply do not accept anything with aliens and spaceships as "realistic." If it's not a "realistic" setting, then the story cannot be taken seriously either.

I would never go and see this movie with someone who didn't like/know Trek. Never. I would not take kindly to anyone raining on my glorious Trek parade. If I was sitting next to someone who laughed derisively or made snide comments I would GET UP and move no matter how rude this was.

(JUST got back from my 5th viewing, cried again during the first 10 minutes.. )

Well, I'm not the one to judge ...
I was laughing when I learned both of my grandparents died.
Same thing when my aunt died.

It's just how I reacted to the deaths of those people.

Just because you don't react in a 'socially acceptable manner' you are an outcast.
    Nice ...
So she laughed ... big deal.
It was a movie after all, and none of the events that happened in it happened in real life (well, our reality if the theory of alternate universes is correct).

I don't think that walking out on her because of THAT was really a good/nice thing to do.
You could have sit through the rest of the movie and then politely finish the date early.

Just because you cannot think of yourself being with someone who laughs at Star Trek is questionable (I think) in ditching them like this.

Individual people react differently to various situations.

I know people who say they don't like Trek even though they've never seen a single moment of it. They also happen to be the same people who say they don't like certain foods without trying them.

I can just imagine Jerry and George talking about this moment while sitting in a booth at Monk's

Jerry: How was your date with Lori, last night?
George: Let's just say it didn't go well.
Jerry: Why? What happened? What did you do?
George: I took her to see Star Trek. I ended up walking out on her in the theater.
Jerry: You what? Walked out on her? George, you can't do that.
George: Jerry, she laughed at the first ten minutes of the movie.
Jerry: Come on. She laughed at the Kirk's birth scene?
    George: Loudly.
Jerry: Laughed at Kirk's birth scene? I cried at Kirk's birth scene.
George: So did I the first time I saw it. I was tearing up again, last night. It's moving.
Jerry: Very moving. She laughed at Kirk's birth scene. Amazing.
George: She guffawed. I was so upset, I told her I had to go to the bathroom, and I never went back to my seat.
Jerry: What kind of person laughs during Kirk's birth scene? Well, you did the right thing, my friend.

Maybe after meeting you she realised that didn't actually like you and laughed deliberately because she knew it would get rid of you so she could enjoy the rest of the movie by herself without you hanging around.

    Just a thought.

Wow. However would one put up with someone who dare think movie previews are too loud?

I don't know. The more the OP posts, the more I'm inclined to want to hear his date's side of the story.

Just because you deem that she has some personality issues doesn't make it ok to just walk out on her, particularly over something as minor as this. I'll admit that the first 10 minutes was may favorite part of almost any movie, but I'm certainly not going to walk out on a giggler. Oh well, if you think being rude is the perfect strategy to show those pesky women not to laugh at your movies, then have at it cheif.

And I agree with a poster above me.... you don't take someone to Star Trek as a first date, especially if you don't know whether or not they like Trek.

I loled when the tattooed biker freaked out and "terminated" Robau. Seeing House's chick as Kirk's mom was kind of funny too, imo.

wow. so glad to be out of the dating pool - I heard it's brutal but yikes! I'm thinking walking out is probably not the best way to handle this. it could have led up to an interesting conversation later. of course OP may have had hints before opeing of the acutal film that they were not particularly compatible.

I dunno, something just seems off. You sure she was laughing at the Kelvin scene? Maybe she was laughing at Nero's crew's appearance? Did you ask her how she felt about Trek before going?

My wife hates Trek and she didn't laugh at any point.

As long as you have Star Trek, you don't need no stinkin' girls!
