Anyway, it could have been a good idea to have them to travel into the gamma Quadrant in the later half of season 6. It could have been used to tie up a few threads from TNG and DS9 as well.

Maybe they could have found out what happened to Kai Opaka after sisko et al left her there and completely forgot about her...

She started the Gamma Quadrant's first BajorBurger franchise.

The advertising slogan, "It's Only A Calorie If The Prophets Say It Is!", was a winner.

Why didn't they make Voyager's mission specifically to explore the Gamma Quadrant via the wormhole, then report back after a 5 year mission?

[Don't answer that. It's rhetorical.]

It would have tied in nicely with DS9 and perhaps increased audience interest in both? After 5 years of exploring the Gamma Quadrant, they end up back at the wormhole on schedule, only to find it had been destroyed (in my version of this, for some reason or another) at the end of DS9. Then the last 2 years of the series focuses on them desperately trying to get back to the AQ. Although, I can't remember how far the wormhole on the GQ side is from the AQ side in "real" space...
