Voyager DVD's - Is it worth it?

Well, I'm done watching the series via the internets, and though the quality is video-stream, and there are chinese/japanese subtitles every now and then, it never bothered me much.

So video/audio quality aside, I'm really wondering about the bonuses and extras. Are they worth buying the DVD's??? What can I expect to see???

The interviews and retrospectives are interesting. The one thing I miss is that I wish they had done some commentaries on at least some of the episodes.

No one thing, no commercials I can go through an episode in about 45 minutes. Can also skip the intro to the show, stop a scene, review a scene, and at the end of each season there is commentary, interviews ans special features that deal with the season you are on. Voyager was
about $129.00 per season up until about a year ago, now a season is about $69.00 per season. I'd say go for it...

So, according to 2 of 10, there are season commentaries, but there are no EPISODE commentaries, is this right?

I agree, especially if you're also going to post on a board that discusses the show. Owning the DVD's makes for great tools to referance infomation to support your statements.

Yeah, or I can just watch it free by streaming, or have the patience to d/l episode torrents.

I'm really just interested in whether or not the bonus features are worth the dough

I have never bought anything for the bonus features so perhaps I am unqualified to say whether it's worth it or not. To me the value in owning the sets is to have the episodes and I have always found Star Trek bonus features kind of subpar and short. You rarely ever learn anything you don't already know from reading Star Trek magazines or Internet websites. I certainly would not put out hundreds of dollars just for the few bonus features they spoon feed you.

In the UK you can now get complete seasons for £12.99 (I guess about $26). It kinda shocks me that you can now get a whole season for what was the cost of a two episode VHS back in the day!

Yes, each season has a "retrospective" along with features on various characters. All these include interviews from during the show as well as "current" interviews. Not all the actors participated in the current ones though.

It sort of depends on how dedicated a fan you are. If you 'like' it, then although I advise you to get the seasons on DVD, you could probably live with watching them on TV or by internet, free of charge and decent quality. However, if you're a supremely dedicated fan, definately go for it. The seasons cost a whole lot less than they used to, and they ARE better on DVD.

I agree with Ktrek. I never buy the DVDs for the bonus features. I want to be able to play the episodes whenever I like and just watch it whenever I choose. The bonus features are just icing on the cake. If you're not really 'into' the series or characters themselves in the first place, then I say don't bother.

I like owning the DVD sets.

Apart from the fact that you have them permanently, you also have the luxury of watching them in decent quality and wherever you have a TV - not sitting at a computer.

I've never watched the VOY extras...but especially since the sets have come down so much in price, personally, I'd buy them.

Cyph, just steal it from the net. The special features aren't great, quite poor actually, and you've already seen the episodes. It's a waste of money.

IMO, the extras are more or less on a same level than on DS9 DVDs, for instance. I bought all seven seasons, because I love Voyager.

I've bought 2 sets of the DVD's one at the original going prices  and another set when it was on sale at Amazon.

The second set won't be touched. Unless I finally burn through the first set of cds. ;)

If you are a fan of the show then by all means you should get the disk sets. The extra features disks have a lot to offer.

Good luck finding them with the extra bonus disks though, those are now going for $50 bucks each!

The worst part of the DVDs, at least in America, is the discs themselves. There's practically no labeling. You have to refer to the box to know which episode is on what disc because the TINY writing around the inner circle is practically illegible and useless. Would it have really put them out to label the discs clearly for cryin' out loud?
