Vic Fontaine - why, just why?

*boggles*

i can't even believe what i'm reading here. how the fuck can anyone like this character? he's horribly written, has a ridiculous personality, litters the show with terrible.fucking.music and absolutely cringe-worthy lines, he somehow makes the regular cast act like complete fools whenever he's around... the list goes on and on.

seriously, wtf are you clowns thinking? it's people like you who keep characters such as lwaxana, vash, nagus, alexander, bareil, etc. from not being laughed off the first draft of every script they infect. how can so many trek fans have such bad taste?

┌П┐(•_•)┌П┐

you people are the WORST.

Seriously, why do the people who are unable to read the rules that they agreed to when they joined this board ALWAYS wait for a holiday weekend to show up around here? It's like clockwork. :p

Warning for trolling. Please read the board rules before posting here again. Because as it stands now, your inability to read and follow basic directions makes me wonder who, in fact, is the 'clown' in this thread.

Especially since by the looks of things, you dug up a three month dead thread specifically to troll.

I think there's a few of those points that have some merit. But it's exactly why Vic shouldn't have been in the show. Having him as a story line for the show isn't going to work for people that won't get it. People just won't like it and will just turn it off. All the other characters he mentioned weren't that bad because they weren't around but a few times a season as serious characters. Alexander was living on the Enterprise for several seasons but he was usually not a main character for those seasons.

Having Vic basically a part of the main crew was just going to be a train wreck like most of the 7th season. What's worse is you could have just not had him there or replaced all his lines with Quark and took out the songs and it would have had the same meaning and told the same story.

The problem is that Quarks was already that place to hang out. The only thing it really adds is that you can listen to period music which people can do in their quarters. And some people may not even like that type of music. Would it have ever been interesting if we made a Klingon bar for Worf that had Klingon operas being sung?

There was a Klingon restaurant with a guy singing Klingon opera.

How many times was he really shown in 7 seasons of DS9? A hand full of times if that? Quarks was a main stay for all the characters to hang out in the 7 seasons.

Wow. Now I don't like Vic but there was no reason to be that nasty. People are entitled to their opinions you know.

Where are the moderators when you really need one?

I know, seriously, I already reported the post yesterday.

And was the world going to explode because I was otherwise occupied over THANKSGIVING WEEKEND?

Good grief. Like there was any question the guy was gonna get a warning? Was your life - or even your ability to post - impeded by my inability to get here right away?

He didn't even come back to keep it rolling - he posted ONCE. That was it. And everyone pretty much ignored him - as they should have. Which makes me very happy, BTW. :p

If I had opened my email and seen a half dozen NMs on a bunch of different posts, and a big 'ole argument brewing in the forum, I would have dropped everything. But that was not the case here.

He posted once. He never came back. Everyone ignored him. I warned him when I got here. We all move on.

No biggie. :)

PKTrekgirl : rofl. get real. i actually DO read the TOS when i sign up for things, but mostly for privacy concerns. besides, i wouldn't be surprised if this forum is riddled with violations. i didn't come here to troll, either. i was reading the comments of fellow trek fans, looking for a reason why this vic fontaine character endured for so long.

and honestly, how the hell does my post affect anyone? maybe you wasted your time reading it once. ok, there goes 15 seconds of your life, tops. or were you somehow compelled to, against your will, read it again and again? i don't see what the big deal is otherwise; i didn't post repeatedly and i didn't spam unrelated content. i went on a moderately insane rant bemoaning the inexplicable popularity of this godawful character. i also insulted the taste and judgment of some of the readers here. so what? did an anonymous madman hurt your feelings? and do you stifle all dissent? or just the abrasive kind? i also didn't receive a warning - i was just banned outright. decidedly UNtrek like, folks. *shakes head*

i was surprised that so many trek fans disengaged all sci-fi discretion and expressed support for this clown, but i didn't do anything that would really disrupt the thread. this whole "trolling" thing is out of control and is just a convenient way of shutting people up with whom you disagree.

┌П┐(•_•)┌П┐┌П┐(•_•)┌П┐┌П┐(•_•)┌П┐

now i can REALLY say you people are the worst... or at least way too godamn sensitive.

Then you knew exactly what you were doing. Easy enough. :D

Wow. Obviously I struck a nerve. Sorry. I guess I won't make that mistake again.

Another Vic Fontaine fan here. Being a fan of the jazzy music that he sang, I thought he only added to DS9. I'm probably the only one who liked the fact that Dr. Bashir played a song of his prior to the final battle in "The Seige of AR-558."

Yes, I'm another owner of the CD, too.

1. Thanks for booting him again, Bonz. Apparently, he DID read the rules. He just had no intention of following them. Which as it turns out, is his problem - not ours.

2. With regard to the actual discussion, I actually am okay with Vic Fontaine. Certainly was better than an any other holodeck characters created on any of the other Trek shows. And I really liked the two episodes in which he is most heavily featured - "Badda Bing..." and "It's Only A Paper Moon". In fact, "It's Only a Paper Moon" is in my top dozen or so episodes of DS9. And it's pretty much all Nog and Vic.

I liked Vic Fontain to a point. I loved "His Way". There are some great moments with that character ("It's Only a Paper Moom", "What You Leave Behind"), yet I feel he was slighly overused...and when that happened it felt like padding...like they just didn't have enough story to tell, which was annoying in the final season. Eventually we had that great 10 episode arc which was awesome, but in the first part of the season, we didn't know that was coming...or I didn't, and it was a bit frustrating hoping for that kind of closure, knowing it was probably the last season, but getting another song from Vic instead. Rewatching it, knowing about the great ending the show has with pretty big payoffs for just about every character (Vic included) it's less annoying for me.

Personally, I wish they had played some Tool or SOAD during that fight scene ... some form of metal ... get the soldiers pumped, you know... ;)

I guess my musical tastes are just the tiniest bit different from Vic's style, heh.

^ Well, I guess I have much wider tastes then. Because I'm good with Sinatra/James Darren...but I'm also a classical music fan and (mostly) a rock/grunge fan.

I'm no Metalica fan, granted...the area between Bruce Springsteen/Bon Jovi/GnR and Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Alice in Chains is more my comfort zone. But I find Sinatra/James Darren really fun and relaxing to listen to under the right conditions.

Ditto Mozart and Rachmaninov.

I guess they thought it would be fun to do the whole Vegas in the 60's sort of thing in the hollosuite. James Darren's music (which consists mostly Sinatra covers) is light and Vegas lounge-ish, and provided a break from the intensity of the Dominion War.

I think it fit perfectly as a break from intensity. And I'm not sure either your music (metal) or mine (grunge) would have provided anything like what they were trying to achieve with Vic.

I never found them to have difficulty 'revving us up' for the intense parts of the show - big battle scenes, etc. - via the score. I think they had that part covered with what they had. I think that Vic was intended to provide a fun break with intensity.

Plus, Vic has the nice effect of making Sinatra songs actually sound good, something Sinatra himself often struggled with.

You have a good point, the juxtaposition of the intense battle scenes with the mellow music was an interesting contast, even if I don't care for that particular style. I was really being kind of tongue-in-cheek about them playing metal, anyway.:p I'm not even a diehard metal fan or anything... though I must say, it's really good workout music!

The problem is that we already had this for the first 6 seasons. It was called Quarks Bar. It makes no sense to have another bar that was out of place. You could have replaced all of Vics lines with people from other shows and they basically have the same impact. And the tough part about Vic is that some people may not like that type of music.

I'm watching through the entirety of Deep Space Nine for the first time (currently in season seven - "Once More Unto the Breach" is my next episode), and I'm uncertain as to where I stand on Vic at the moment. With a show as character-oriented as DS9 is, I thought it was a bit odd that a seemingly "random" character who basically came out of nowhere was the one who helped Odo and Kira to finally come together. On the other hand, perhaps such an individual was the only one who could since he was removed from the situation, unlike the others onboard the situation. Based on where I am in the series, I've seen three of his appearances so far, and I'm looking forward to watching him help Nog post-"The Siege of AR-558." At the moment, though, I'm wondering why you'd introduce a new main character who is trained as a counselor, yet use a recurring character instead to help one of the other main characters with such large issues.
