Vic Fontaine - why, just why?

Sorry Shran, but to me, sometimes he is. It didn't help that his introduction coincided with Odo/Kira getting together. You think that would endear him to me, but instead, I was pissed that he was anywhere near that storyline. That wasn't exactly the way I'd have chosen for them to get together.

Not rabid, but I did like the Vic character. It was interesting to see how sometimes wisdom really does fit no matter the the time, era, situation, etc. Vic couldn't see much of the universe that the characters who visited him did, but he was able to impart advice that was pertinent to life in general. I loved how he booted Nog out of the holosuite after a while. Time to face reality, kid.

See, one of the things that annoyed me about was that he was so "wise." His first scene was him practically reading everyone's minds. He knew that the Chief missed his wife, that Worf/Jadzia hadn't been married long, and that Odo was in love with Kira, while she just considered him a friend. A regular person who just meant a bunch of people isn't usually that insightful - to say nothing of a hologram. It was like "Look at Vic! Isn't he insightful? Isn't he a special, special hologram? Don't you love him now?" Ugh.

But as to booting Nog out of the holosuite, I did enjoy that. But first impressions mean a lot, and my first impression of him was that he annoyed me.

I can see why people wouldn't like Vic - a hologram who doesn't run haywire and try to blow up the ship or kill everyone in sight...heresy!

Ira Behr was into the the whole Rat Pack stuff. Originally they wanted Frank Sinatra Jr. to play Vic. So it's simply because he could that Vic exists. Anyway I thought he was a cool cat. I even bought James Darren CD because of it.

I suppose it was nice to see a different style of music on Star Trek. We (the audience) had started to believe that only classical music had survived World War III. Who's to say that todays rock music is not tommorows "classic music"? I'm sure the Beatles will survive into the 24th century, and it was nice to see that lounge music had.

I like "lounge music", that said, Fontaine annoyed me. I can't place my finger on it. Maybe it was the slang, as someone else mentioned, or maybe it was that he took something away from Quark. We already had a Vic in Quark, maybe that was it.

I think you hit it pretty well. If the crew needed someone to listen to their troubles, Quark was there with an ear (actually, two very large ones).

I never found that Quark really listened all that much unless it benefited him in some way.... check out the episode "Rivals" when he tried to "Listen" to O'Brien.... he tried, for about 15 seconds, and then went off on his own plans and ideas on how to bring back customers to his bar.

He did have some good advice from time to time, but most of the time the advice was wrong and you ended up having to do the opposite of what he said to make his advice worthwhile...... Vic actually stopped for a minute and listened to people's problems and gave some insightful advice in a welcoming way.

If there was a Vic in Quark, it was pretty small.

Not to bash Quark, I liked the character..... I just saw the two of them doing different things and it wasn't like he was taking business away from Quark...... he was in one of Quark's holosuites afterall.

It's weird how a supporting role in Star Trek DS9 had more character development than some of the Voyager crew.

Not saying I liked the guy though. I tend to hate most of the episodes involving a holodeck.

Quark did have some insights though. He warned Major Kira about Mirror Bariel, for instance, and he helped Odo through his Kira angst when she got with Shakkar in season 4. I wouldn't say he was the best one to give marital advice to O'Brien however but ... Vic? Meh. I'd rather hear Quark say "hew-mons" than hear VIC say "Pallie." Ugh, "Pallie." Hate that.

Vic I always found very forced. His charm was largely metallic too..Quark, on the other hand was somehow much more lovable despite all the swarm and self-interest.

Another Vic fan signing in. I loved the character and just wished that his club was close to where I live. I bought "his" CD "This One's From the Heart" as a direct result of DS9 and play it regularly.

Sinatra? Who's he?? ;)

All holodeck episodes; brilliant!

Aww poor Voyager. To be fair its probably true about Chakotay and Harry Kim, but who cares about them.

This is sarcasm right? I did like some holodeck episodes but I can't believe anyone would like fair haven.
