Vic Fontaine - why, just why?

My three biggest annoyances with DS9 were:

1) Vic Fontaine
2) The "humanification" of Gul Dukat
3) The subsequent Dukat/Pah Wraith arc

I never understood the hate for this guy. He turned up towards the end of season six, and by that stage I'd rather listen to Vic's lounge tunes than watch more idiotic shenanigans involving the mirror universe, Dukat’s cult or the Ferengi any day of the week.

His Way, It's Only a Paper Moon and Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang were a fantastic episodes too.

Vic's episodes for definitely some of my favourites. I dunno why some people love him and some hate him? maybe they don't like the music?

I enjoyed the Vic Fontaine episodes for probably a different reason than most simply because I'm likely older than most of you. As an original Trek-fan from back in the '60s, I also greatly enjoyed another show that premiered that same year, THE TIME TUNNEL. It starred James Darren, and the Vic Fontaine role was his first foray back into science fiction since the '60s. It was great to see him in the Trek universe.

Sisko singing "The Best is Yet to Come" was pretty weird though.

YEAH i thought that was really weird, it doesn't really explain how he would know the lines and his voice is just wrong for the song i thought :p

I bought the album also its awesome music to listen to on the way to work :)

That's about 2/3rds of the final season really. And I also don't like how the dominion were handled in the end.

Very mixed feelings. Have no problem with the crew going to a club to relax, have no problem with them liking that style and period of music.

Have huge issue with Vic being self aware and wise as the oracle. Seriously cannot express how stupid that is. Trek made it very clear that this is not something holograms can do, really beyond current level technology, and yet poor old barely can make a living Quark has one.

Seriously, how is that possible, and as such how can we the audience ever react to this character is a realistic manner. You can't. It isn't rational.

It's like special effects the illusion is to make you believe this model is a real ship, but when you show the wires supporting it you lose the reality.

Vic took me out of the reality every single episode where he behaved in a way that is unusual for a hologram, which in Vic's case was almost every time.

One of the great things Voyager did with their Doctor is to have his road to being a realized character be a slow going one (it still was faster then I would like, but I do understand the reality of tv).

The problem is that Quarks was already that place to hang out. The only thing it really adds is that you can listen to period music which people can do in their quarters. And some people may not even like that type of music. Would it have ever been interesting if we made a Klingon bar for Worf that had Klingon operas being sung?

Vic wasn't the problem. It was the writers stopping the war so everyone could go have an adventure on the holodeck for an entire episode. If Starfleet personel put as much effort into fighting the Dominion as they did with baseball games and holo-capers, the war would've been a two-parter.

The only good Fontaine episode was It's Only a Paper Moon, which was really about the war.

I had a similar "WTF, holodeck?" moment through the entire episode where the DS9 "team" played baseball against the crew of a Vulcan ship.

You have to be really "treadmilling" the floor, so to speak, when walking in large open areas. But, in simple terms, there is no way that you can STATION people as far apart as a baseball diamond *AND* in the outfield *AND* a dugout *A*N*D* the stands in a room the size of a holosuite. Unless it's really a holoTARDIS.

I hated that fekking episode.

Love Vic Fontaine. Love the whole character, the self aware aspects, loved "It's Only A Paper Moon", and James Darren's a great singer. :D

Like the character or hate it, one of things I've noticed, you don't forget the songs.

I forgot the songs. Except that I hated them.
Look I like that type of music and I like the songs. But it's subjective. Some people will find that music boring and stupid, and they have that right. But it's why Star Trek didn't really go into that type of thing as a main story. Look at Riker's taste in Jazz music. It was really only used as a joke most of the time it was referred to.
