Wasn't season 1 begun with a different FX house? And wasn't an entire in-house VFX team fired before that? Disco S1 was a mess behind the scenes.

Those are both correct. Pixomondo was a last-minute replacement for the in house team. From what I understand, the in house guys got laid off because the production delays from other departments were so extensive that they were left with no work to do for weeks, and rather than continue to pay artists who weren't doing anything, the entire team was liquidated.

Have the VFX on that over-the-shoulder shot of Discovery looking toward the Enterprise changed at all since the first trailer? I don't have a comparison handy. Anyone?

Any other shots we've seen repeated? I'm always curious to see how shots improve or change with time.

Interesting - why completely CG the Marina Bay Sands hotel?

    Maybe its not open
Maybe its a big fuck off window, that they slide away to let shuttles in and out
    Or maybe not

I really wish they would work on the ship's CGI model as well. Especially the bulky "underbelly" is still severly lacking in details.

Even the original 60's model didn't have such unloving edges and corners! Even then they had the foresight to put at least some hull details there, or round the edges a little bit.

Probably the main reason why NONE of the new shots show the ship from an angle from below:

Because from the top the ship looks pretty good.

the ship definitely looks beautiful in a lot of these shots from the new trailer, but yeah... we're heading into season 2 and i'm still not sure how i feel about this ship and it all comes down to that secondary hull and those ridiculously long, spiky nacelles. i wish i could say they should've shortened them because i don't think that would've done it, there's just something off about the design.

but maybe that's what people thought about the enterprise-D when she first appeared in TNG. and people were definitely tripped up by the ryan church enterprise in star trek 2009. (and those two ships are my favorites of the franchise.)

so maybe she won't look so weird in another season or two, or when they introduce another new hero ship that everyone scratches their heads over.

To be honest, TNG premiered in ̶1̶̶9̶̶8̶̶9̶, *1987 and I STILL don't like the Enterprise-D's christmas light - nacelles.:guffaw:
And that became the basis for every iteration since then nonetheless! The red front - blue side-stripe - I don't like it. I always sigh in relief when it's toned down (on VOY, and the Ent-E, where the red bussard collectors became smaller slits). One of the few things I don't like about the NX-01 dsign - it should have had TOS-like orange nacelle caps! And I HATE that they put it on the retcon-DISCO-Enterprise! ugh. Compared to that, I'm fine with the all-blue Discovery-nacelles herself (as well as of the JJprise).

Overall, I think: The overly long nacelles are kinda' weird. But they are a distinctive design element of the ship. People chose it for the specific way it looks.

The boxy underbelly of the ship though - that just looks like an accident. Like someone made a CGI-model in a hurry, made a basic shape - but then never got around finishing it. Which is actually what according to Fuller happened: They said the original Comic Con trailer model was rushed to have something presentable - and the underside of the ship is basically not changed since that:

These are the best angles of the Discoprise I've seen. I like the red paint on the angled nacelle pylon, matching the corridor outside Spock's quarters.

And I love that they've adopted the ST'09/ID warp speed effect. Yes, it's just an angrier version of Star Wars' hyperspace, but it's cool. And much better than the weird bubble effect of S1.

I'm pretty sure the "Red Paint" is actually the reflected glow from the Impulse Engines.
You can see it partially on top of the secondary hull as well.

    Well that's disappointing:lol:

Here I was hoping a little Of Gods and Men Enterprise goodness had seeped into Discovery

so there has been some updates to the VFX between the trailers and the promo spot after "the escape artist", as pointed out by trekcore...

    the original shot:

    the new one:

the lighting is quite a bit different, now the enterprise is being towed by two (malachowski class?) ships.

Why do they assume it's the same shot, just because she's standing at the same window?

The second shot can be easily explained, from later in the same episode. Enterprise makes her appearance early in the episode (broken down) then, later in the episode, two Starfleet tugs show up to tow her back to dry-dock for repairs... Simple.

Her pose and position is also identical. Even the folds in the fabric on her uniform are the same.

It’s 1:1, you could overlay the two.
