since the old visual effects in discovery thread has been dormant for 7 months and discovery is back in just over 1 month, let's discuss discovery (and discovery adjacent) VFX.

just going by the latest trailer (and the opening shot of short trek: runaway), it looks like season 2 is going to be lit more naturally than season 1's (arguably) garish approach to space shots:

And thank God. Season 1's VFX reminded me of Gene Roddenberry's "Andromeda", which came out...15 years before DIS. Also is it a good idea to always have the shuttlebay doors open like that??

seems like they're just leaving them open all the time now because... eh who wants to keep opening and closing some space doors?

It is odd. We didn't see that "always open" shuttle bay setup until TNG. Now, apparently, it was around during TOS. Wonder why the Enterprise was never upgraded during its numerous refits?

Maybe there's a lot of scenes in Season 2 where they use shuttles :rommie:

i don't think there's a single shot in this trailer with the shuttle bay doors closed, here's another one with the door hanging open:

Just sayin': Somebody already created a thread for that just two months ago:

Whoever that was must have had a sharp eye. And been very smart. And handsome.

    oh man i'm terribly sorry.

the creator of this thread clearly only exhibits two of those three qualities.

We saw the TNG shuttle bay opened quite a bit during the series run.

They opened them to use them, I don't recall them just generally being open all the time.

[Just for the record, I really don't care if Discovery has the bay open a lot or not.] :)

hard to say how bad it is from that screen shot, but at least the subtle nebula in the background isn't a mess of hot pink or something like it would've been last season

The Season 2 shots are much improved, but they should bring me on as VFX supervisor if they really want to nail it. :nyah:

To be honest, their DIS season 1 work is really nothing to brag about. And I guess they are only allowed to show season 2 footage after it aired.

But I'm fully expecting visual effects breakdown videos from season 2 onward of Discovery.
