Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

The Oncoming Storm? Sounds like a Doctor Who novel.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I like Riding The Tempest. Put my vote down for that.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

First of all, let me just point out that there is no "storm motif" in the series' titles.

Harbinger merely means "a sign or portent of things to come; a forerunner." It has no direct relation to weather phenomena.

Summon the Thunder is a metaphor for invoking the wrath of something powerful.

Reap the Whirlwind is a Biblical reference, as the book's epigraph makes clear.

It is only a coincidence that "thunder" and "whirlwind" have their origins in weather phenomena. It is in no way a "trend." It is a coincidence, nothing more.

Unless, of course, Dayton and Kevin use another weather metaphor for book four. Then it will become a trend. ;)

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I know "Harbinger" isn't involved in weather phenomena, but you still have to admit that two out of three is going to be a fairly strong influence on how people think of the titles.

If the fourth book resists the high pressure, follows a different current, and leaves the storm system behind, I'm sure it will all blow over.

howsabout THE GATHERING STORM for book 4?
If the storm motif is set to continue, something along the lines of Riding the Tempest might suit the series better, especially since (and I haven't actually read the book yet) there was one hell of storm raised by the revelations at the end and they need to be ridden for the crew to emerge at the other end.

I'm putting that forward as the next official title BTW, maybe Wardilmore will pick it up!

I can one up you there: Ride the Lightning. Title every section after tracks off the album.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I think the next book should be called Star Trek: Vanguard: Jammed with Big-Ass Laughs.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Or, as an homage to TOS tradition, How Much for Just the Station?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I thought the next title had already been settled on: Star Trek: Vanguard: F*** the Klingons!.

I like that one! (But that was probably obvious...)

Vanguard: Summer of Love

I can accept that, but if you look at Shakespeare's The Tempest, there are a few themes in there that can be allegorised to the Vanguard series as it currently stands. Since the characters will be riding thecurrent of the political/emotional storm at the end of RtW, I think that Riding the Tempest would make a great title. Please pass it along to Wardilmore for consideration, they can chuck it if they want, but we fans do come up with good ideas occasionally.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I think Dayton & Kevin have said online recently that they already have a title in mind, and that it is a quote from The Tempest, but that doesn't necessarily make it directly "storm-related."

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Uh-huh, of course they would not have chosen that particular play for any other reason

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^Not meaning to fart in your elevator, Xeris, but Christopher is exactly right: I did post somewhere once that Dayton and I do have a working title for the next book, and it did come from The Tempest. But it's not "storm-related" at all. It's merely something that fit our theme for the book. And I'll go out on a limb here and say that the final title won't relate to a storm, either, impending or otherwise. I think we're all kinda stormed out.

So yeah, Riding the Tempest would make a great title for a book. Just not the one we're writing. :) But should I ever write a Western or a rodeo book, I'll snatch that one up. And to be clear, I'm not dismissing it as a title because it was suggested on a board. Fans have plenty of great ideas—the majority of Star Trek scripts and books are written by fans, after all. Well, except for Leisner's stuff. He tells me all the time how much Star Trek sucks, and I'm so sick of it.
