Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Incidentally, how did the names for the sister ships to Sagittarius come to be? Masao's doing, Dave's, somebody else's?

How many such sisters do you think exist at the time of Harbinger? Of RtW? How many is Starfleet planning on procuring? Are we talking silver bullet or Jeep here?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

well, Bowman is obviously a joke on Archer. Artemis is the Grekk goddess who used a bow in her hunts. Locksley is where Robin Hood comes from. Longbow is obviously another archery gag. Kyudo is the only one i don't get...

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

They are all archery-related: Kyu-do is the old Japanese art of bowmanship.

One could add names on that theme. Nimrod, of course. Orion, perhaps, even though there is bound to be confusing overlap with other Trek ships of that name. Possibly further gods and goddesses of the hunt. Cernunnos, Diana, Flidais, Kurunta, Naravik, Ochosi, Sedna, Yi... If there ever was a popular type of god or goddess other than that of fertility, it was the one for hunting!

USS Hunter would also be fun - a secret homage to Christopher Pike!

That picture is pretty but perhaps in need of some "Trekkifying" before it can be used as cover art. Where does the pic originate?
No idea. Found it years ago in a Google Images search for "spaceship". And yes, I am aware that it would need to be "Trekkified," which is why I suggested to Masao that he and I could confer offline.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

David, I snagged the pic of Rocinante from your site. I think it might be some Star Wars fan art or maybe something from a video game. Looks like an X-Wing fighter on steroids. If you'd like to send me some ideas about the design, I have my sketch pad ready.

Timo: Regarding the source of names of sister ships, it ain't me. I am a barely literate shipwright.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Bowman is also the last name of someone who directed over a dozen episodes of TNG, among them "Q Who," "Where No One Has Gone Before," "A Matter of Honor," and "Brothers."

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

oh, yeah, Rob Bowman who went on to direct numerous X-Files episodes and the sub-par Elektra movie

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Bowman is also a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I think I wrote something about "a sister ship named after the commander of the first Earth-Jupiter probe mission" when the Sagittarius was first mentioned in Harbinger discussions. :)

I just love ambivalent starship naming. Is the Drexler class named after the scifi graphics demigod, or the US Navy hero?

He also directed the first X-Files movie.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I actually kind of liked Elektra -- with the proviso that I'm totally unfamiliar with the comics character and was judging the film only in comparison to itself and the Daredevil movie. It didn't have a brilliant story, admittedly, but I liked the direction and stylistic qualities of the film a great deal.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Nope, Johnson directed Daredevil. Bowman directed Elektra.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

No, Rob Bowman directed; Mark Steven Johnson has the screenwriter credit.

Which, really, makes him just as guilty.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Nope. It was written by Zak Penn, Stuart Zicherman, and Raven Metzner.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Strange because he usually directs his own stuff.... at least as far as I know....

And Ghost Rider wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Oops, sorry. I see now that his credit is actually for the characters (plural? who else carried over to "Elektra"?) since he was screenwriter for Daredevil. Although, considering how little the two films actually had in common...

EDIT: In reply to KRAD's post

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

don't get me wrong, i liked Elektra (hello! Jen Garner in red leather! with sais!) but by the standards of the X-Men movies, Spider-Mans et al, it was nowhere near as good.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Just finished RTW a little while ago. I greatly enjoyed this outing and like that the characters of Reyes and T'Prynn had consequences to their decisions, which is something that is sometimes missing from Trek in general.

My favorite part:
Diego in his office in chapter 31 waiting for the envitable and Jetanien asking if there is anything he can do. Diego, drinking coffee that's too hot, answers, "Yeah, have someone bring me some sugar."
