Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Do you know yet, if any other authors other than you three will be handling Vanguard. Don't get me wrong, I've absolutely loved the first three books, I was just curious.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I was hoping to do extensive annotations for Reap the Whirlwind, but the finite nature of linear time (and my daytime employer's knack for consuming my waking portions of it) have left me with no spare moments to draft them.

During my brief break from Trek work over the holidays I was developing an original book series that my agent is currently shopping around for me, and then I submerged into story development on the Destiny trilogy -- for which I am now immersed in the manuscript.

Someday I hope to annotate both RtW and my Wolverine novel, Road of Bones, for which I did considerable research. But today is not that day.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I meant to ask you when I was on before, is the way you guys work on Vanguard the way that authors usually work on multiple author stories?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I don't know that there is any "usual" way. In publishing, the answer to most questions is, "It depends." This just happens to be the way that we've all agreed to move ahead with the Vanguard series for now.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I finished RTW last night. Great book and a great series. Vanguard is up there with DS9-R and Titan. Some random thoughts:
1. The Clerks homage was cute, but really took me out of the book.
2. My only other nitpick would be the spoilers in the minipedia at the end. Other than that, I looooovvvved the book.
3. Hopefully, we'll get more Endeavour material with Kevin and Dayton's next turn at the series.
4. I can't help but picture Jimmie Smits as Reyes and James Cameron's version of Zefram Cochram as Quinn when I read a Vanguard book.
5. I can't wait for book four!

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Addressing point 2:

The minipedia is at the end for a reason. Even then, all of the "spoiler" entries have RtW codes in parentheses. Given that there will probably not be a new Vanguard novel until 2009, this was a good place to put the minipedia.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

After I finished the new Harry Potter book (probably this evening) I will return to "Reap the Whirlwind".

I have read half of the book so far and although I like it, I have trouble to keep track of who is who sometimes and what is going on. I don`t have time to re-read books at the moment and my memory is not very good.

Therefore I am grateful for the minipedia and I am also glad that spoilers don`t bother me at all. I find it very helpful to have a look there now and again, refresh my memory and be able to enjoy the book more.

Me personally, I think it would have been better to leave the spoilers for "Reap the Whirlwind" out in order to protect people who are not spoiler fans.

I'm sure that somethings gotta give soon in the books because it's mentioned that Atish's family is on Deneva and StT mentions that Starfleet has just lost contact with an entire system.

James Cameron's version of Cochrane? Was that the one who had to battle a Terminator sent back in time to kill him? Hey, actually that's not too different from what James Cromwell's version of Cochrane did in FC. ;)

It's roughly time for Operation: Annihilate!, IIRC.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Umm, I don't think you do RC. All VNG novels to date take place between "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and "The Corbomite Maneuver." The reference in Summon the Thunder was to the Ingraham B system, which fell to the flying pancakes, err, parasites, two years before "Operation: Annihilate!"

According to what Dayton & Kevin said at Shore Leave, VNG 4 will cover the majority of TOS's first season, but probably not the whole thing. So the events of O:A would not occur until after VNG 4, most likely.

That's what I get for posting while I should be working. James Cromwell.

The first season also has the broadest range of stardates. Is the assumption still going to be that this season spans only one year?

^ As far as I know, since we're trying to adhere to the Star Trek Chronology, because it's a shared resource we can all work from.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Very good book. Finished it last night and I liked the "cliffhanger" ending.

Definitely picked up with the realization of just how powerful things were, and the tie in with Carol Marcus was one that took me off guard. The whole Quinn/Pennetin sub-plot was very well handled and they felt like they got somewhere in this one.

Looking forward to the eventual next book.

Btw wrt to earlier comments about the feel of the books. Thinking about it, it's more like the days of the BattleTech novels. I could always pick out a Stackpole one and be incredibly satisfied with the style. There were others who were good like Coleman, but they never quite had the feel of Stackpole... Probably a similar situation here with the first writer definitely putting a stamp on the books.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind

Finished it. Loved it. Want more!!!!
Vanguard just gets better and better. I couldn't believe how it finished..... but no spoilers here.
Truly great!
