Vanguard Precipice- It's been read. Probable spoilers

The only thing that bothered me about this book was the fact that Cervantes Quinn really became a carbon copy of Han Solo, much more so than previous entries.

I kept seeing John McClane myself.

Oh, and I had a question about Vanguard: is the station named after the satellite?

Presumably both the station and the satellite were called Vanguard because they fit the definition of that word -- the advance guard, the forefront, the pioneering effort. Project Vanguard was the first American attempt to put satellites into orbit, and the Vanguard starbase is literally Starfleet's vanguard in the Taurus Reach, the forefront of its expansion into that region.

^ Marco and I also settled on Vanguard as the series title because of the word's connotations in relation to a cultural or artistic undertaking.

Well, it was partly, as Christopher said, to indicate that this represented the farthest-forward effort of Starfleet in that time period, and that it represented the forefront in technology and the edge of the Federation's frontier. Its self-referential connotations were just an added bonus. However, I was unaware of the name of the U.S. satellite program or of the similarly named element in the Martin-Mangels novel The Sundered.

I just started reading this this morning, and so far it has been great.

Finished it today. Thought it was ok. Never really enjoy books that span a year as I never feel that time difference, rather the stories take a matter of weeks.

finsihed it last night. great. enjoyed it. only remember one use of fuck. missed Skylla was the Falcon.

nice to see we got another mention for the U.S.S. Gloucester. hehehe...

I finished it. It ended much better than it started out.Who is doing the next book and when is it scheduled to come out?

Thoroughly enjoyed another outing at Vanguard Station. Really ranks up my appreciation for the OS, and makes me want to read more OS books (there was a Vulcan Academy Murder reference in Precipice, IIRC), as well as hope for another original series.

As for the use of the dreaded "f'enheimer," and you'd think there would be new curse words by the 23rd Century, "fuck" is an old, and relatively unchanged, Anglo-Saxon curse word. It was brought to England in 1066 from the Continent. It's survived a millennium without much change, so I suspect it would remain that way into Trek's time.

I, BTW, completely missed its use in the book. Hmm.

Re: Vanguard Precipice- It's been read. SOME SPOILERS

So two books I have just gotten to over the Holidays are The 4400: Promises Broken and Vanguard: Precipice. Coincidentally, both by David Mack. I am very impressed by both reads, but since this is the Trek area, I'll limit my comment to the Vanguard book. I really love this series and the depth of character development (thank you Mr. Mack). Cervantes Quinn becoming SI and being a big part of this adventure? Brilliant! I was really hoping for a more in depth scene with Quinn and Pennington - like sitting down over a beer and trading stories - I know Quinn's work with SI would have prevented it, but still. The scene towards the end with T'Prynn and the piano put a lot of closure to her character - it will be interesting to see how she is treated as a Lieutenant JG. I can only think there is something bigger for her yet.
And I can't wait to see what's up next for Diego Reyes.
Thanks for the ride -and I'm eagerly anticipating the next Vanguard book and Mr. Mack's MU book that is in the mail.
PS - the 4400 book was awesome!
