News Van Sprang: Leland, AI And The Borg

The thing is: In a better written show, we would know wether that's just an in-joke, or if they're really going to build up a Borg-storyline.

Like, a better written show would have thoroughly introduced "Control" before it turned evil, and gave it it's own, unique design, character, backstory and theme. And especially made clear what it's capable of, what it's goal is, and why. If they then suddenly had green nanoprobes assimilating people, we would have a pretty clear picture weather that's a set-up for a future development, or an in-joke the creators played because of the obvious similarities.

But as it is, it looks AWFULLY lot like a late-addition / made up on the fly. Like, they had the idea of making "Control" that future evil A.I., and then added up details, and because they didn't know any better, they gave it powers like the Borg. And then, suddenly one of the producers realized "hey, that is like the Borg"! And then they retro-fitted a the Borg-aspect in it. Not planned out or anything. Just "because it's cool", in a late-addition ass-pull, that's not going to draw in any new viewers or garner interest (imagine how much publicity a "Borg origin" story would have pulled!) - but just an accident. With absolutely NO ONE thinking about the consequences or implications. That would be in line how this series has operated thus far...
Given they took pretty much the whole Control storyline from the novels them slightly altering the Destiny storyline for the Borg's origin wouldn't be that unexpected.

That's why it's so confusing that they continue to bury their originality under tons and tons of shit references and crash full frontal into every! single! possible! fuck-up you can possible do wrong with a prequel.
What does Star Wars has do with this?
I bet if everyone relaxes a bit and watches the next few episodes, we'll all know the actual answer, and we won't have spent weeks getting angry and uptight over potentially nothing.
I can only say that I hope you are right...I truly do. But, my gut reaction is not so positive.

Why do that, when we can have this instead? :p

I personally don't think the audience has to be spoon-fed. The process of figuring things out represents much of the appeal. As for the supposed issue with originality vs. origins, DSC has gotten slammed for virtually every major original idea it's implemented. And then when they do what prequels do and *explain* anything that's canon, everyone throws a fit about that, too.

To me, it's sad that so many people are irate at the idea of explaining the origin of the Borg - but can't wait to see how Pike ends up in a wheelchair. I know you're talking about how they've gone about explaining some things, but we haven't even established whether this is, in fact, the Borg. People are losing their minds when it could be something else altogether.

And unfortunately there are just as many people who will lose their minds if it's NOT the Borg.

Fandom expectations not being met.....what a total bitch it can be.

I mean if we didn't have 30 years of Borg (May 5th this year actually is the 30th anniversary of Q Who) history directly tying concepts like nanoprobes that take over and modify a host, the specific glowing green color, a very specific phrase (even if thesaurused), etc in universe to them then what's been going on the last two episodes wouldn't evoke such reactions.
Let me see if I understand this correctly-I have read and listened to complaints regarding the inclusion of familiar elements like Sarek, Spock, Pike, and the Enterprise, as well as the changing of assumed established elements with the uniforms, starship designs and the like. But, this particular piece of lore inclusion is not only expected but welcomed?

What am I missing?

It may be shade of green about 25% different than the Borg green...

Even if it's not the Borg they want us (the hardcore nerds) to think it is, that's the only reason to add the "Struggle is Pointless" line. As someone said they are trolling us

I Prefer the novel version. Control there didn’t need some sphere knowledge to become self aware.

It's a good thing they don't base their plots on Trek novels.

Oh wait.
Let's face it. This is Discovery, tiny glowy things not being blue is hella suspicious.
So... Kirk cameo confirmed.

I challenge everyone who has boldly declared for all that it won't be the Borg: IF it turns out to be the Borg, please post a selfie taken during the big reveal.
Is taking this interview at face value a bold declaration? I'd say it's more bold to assume that Alan van Sprang was actively spinning layers of deception on the spot. I recall how they playfully interacted with @RealJavidIqbal and casually announced the Mirror Universe in the past, and can't imagine that they care that much.

A connection to the Borg is still possible. Maybe we'll get a mention of future technology found 100 years ago in the Arctic that S31 adapted (a reference to ENT: Regeneration and Leland's comment about technological advances being the result of time travel)... or maybe the sphere contained knowledge of the Borg. But the whole idea of Leland being the first Borg drone and foster father of the Borg Queen or whatever is pretty much dead in the water now. If we get anything like that, I'll shave my beard and put on a Starfleet uniform.
