Just because it is green doesn't make it Borg.
Let's face it. This is Discovery, tiny glowy things not being blue is hella suspicious.
The thing is: In a better written show, we would know wether that's just an in-joke, or if they're really going to build up a Borg-storyline.
Like, a better written show would have thoroughly introduced "Control" before it turned evil, and gave it it's own, unique design, character, backstory and theme. And especially made clear what it's capable of, what it's goal is, and why. If they then suddenly had green nanoprobes assimilating people, we would have a pretty clear picture weather that's a set-up for a future development, or an in-joke the creators played because of the obvious similarities.
But as it is, it looks AWFULLY lot like a late-addition / made up on the fly. Like, they had the idea of making "Control" that future evil A.I., and then added up details, and because they didn't know any better, they gave it powers like the Borg. And then, suddenly one of the producers realized "hey, that is like the Borg"! And then they retro-fitted a the Borg-aspect in it. Not planned out or anything. Just "because it's cool", in a late-addition ass-pull, that's not going to draw in any new viewers or garner interest (imagine how much publicity a "Borg origin" story would have pulled!) - but just an accident. With absolutely NO ONE thinking about the consequences or implications. That would be in line how this series has operated thus far...

Maybe, but it's an asshole thing to dangle in front of fans. Between "struggle is pointless" and the glowing green nanites it's kind of past being a cheeky wink and nod.Well... that's just a tad bit harsh.
It's like Iron Man 3 with The Mandarin. Bait and switches are never fun.
That was bloody ingenious! It was a really insightful way to subvert the whole racist caricature cartoon villain thing.
The thing is: The Mandarin-switch was really good! I know, a lot of people didn't like it. But goddamn, they knew what they were doing. Like, it was an actual, genuine surprise in the cinema! Something that legitimately completely pulled the rug out from under me. Something I never expected a superhero blockbuster would be able to do.
THIS one? The "Borg" surprise/non-surprise? This feels a LOT like "Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Khan! Trust us! BTW we have a completely unexpected surprise for you!".
Yeah, that comparison is more directly relevant.
I really liked how Iron Man Armored Adventures handled The Mandarin so I was disappointed with how Iron Man 3 handled him.
But anyway, all of this 98% direct referencing to the Borg turning out to not be Borg would piss me off. Like you said, the writing and showrunning in this show is pretty bad so I can't tell if it's just in-jokes.
And that's depressing.
They should introduce lava lamps into the show. Everyone would treat them like the mashed potatoes in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. "Look! They're glowing but they're not blue! This means something."

I don't know. I think the plotting of this show is embarrassingly bad. That's childlike what-if-I-had-the-keys unimaginative fanwank. That's of course part of the writing.
But the showrunning also includes stuff like casting, production, design and a whole lot of other things where this show is actually really, really good at. And hell - a lot of the individual writing in episodes is pretty great too!
That's the real headscratcher part of this series. There is a really solid product in there, and it's really good on so many levels you don't even notice. That's why it's so confusing that they continue to bury their originality under tons and tons of shit references and crash full frontal into every! single! possible! fuck-up you can possible do wrong with a prequel.
I challenge everyone who has boldly declared for all that it won't be the Borg: IF it turns out to be the Borg, please post a selfie taken during the big reveal.

I mean if we didn't have 30 years of Borg (May 5th this year actually is the 30th anniversary of Q Who) history directly tying concepts like nanoprobes that take over and modify a host, the specific glowing green color, a very specific phrase (even if thesaurused), etc in universe to them then what's been going on the last two episodes wouldn't evoke such reactions.
Either it is the Borg and some of us will be happy and some of us won't. Or it isn't the Borg and some of us will be happy and some of us will be annoyed at the amauter hour bait and switch.
