STUDENT’S “HOT FOR TEACHER” ESSAY GETS HIM SUSPENDED THIS NEWS BROUGHT TO YOU BY VH1’S DAVE BASNER
A student at Rochester, Michigan’s Oakland University has been suspended for a year and it’s all Van Halen’s fault… kind of. Aspiring writer Joseph Corlett penned an essay for his Advanced Critical Writing class about his attraction to his female professors and titled it after the band’s song, “Hot for Teacher.” School administrators felt it crossed the line and suspended him. He is appealing the ruling.
Corbett stated, “I’m getting all A’s and when you get all A’s, I’m not going to start writing about freight trains or snow. [The class’ teacher] made it clear that she didn’t want us to edit. She wanted the stuff ".
“Hot for Teacher” is off the band’s 1984 album, 1984. When it came out, the Parents Music Resource Center protested it and called for it to be pulled from the radio and TV due to its sexually suggestive lyrics referring to sex with a teacher.
