Van Halen Returns!

I probably couldn't get it right with 10 guesses. I have no idea what's popular anymore. Except for the bands I like, the only radio I listen to is NPR.

I would suggest Sirius if you're more into radio. Wide range of stuff depending on your taste or mood.

I have it in my Jeep, but almost never listen to it because of the hard drive that's also in there. That's full of every symphonic metal album I own (about 75), plus the new VH album ;).

I had Sirius in my Jeep when I was in the lower 48 - it doesn't work in Alaska...but I am so addicted to it that I transferred to an internet membership and listen to it every day at work on my computer. Or was listening to it, anyway, until THIS DOGGONE VAN HALEN ALBUM CAME OUT!

Now I'm full time on Van Halen. One Amazon reviewer said that this record is like finding the Fountain of Youth...and I totally agree with that! I feel like I'm 18 again...and have this irresistible urge to stay up all night partying. :rommie:

Which stations do you listen to on Sirius? I mainly listen to:
Octane
Lithium
Pearl Jam Radio
E Street Radio

And sometimes
60's on 6
80's on 8
Little Stevie

Octane
Boneyard
Liquid Metal (though I liked it better when it was Hard Attack)
70's
80's
Classic Rewind
Classic Vinyl
Hair Nation
1st Wave

Depends on my mood, or I just might flip between presets. But again, haven't listened in a while.

So, you were 18 in 1984? That would make you about 2 years older than me.

I kinda owe Sirius for starting me out on symphonic metal. The first 2 songs I ever heard were on Hard Attack about 5 years ago.

One Kamelot song & one Nightwish song and 75+ CD's later, here I am. Not to mention Lacuna Coil.

I still love it when a classic group comes out with something new. VH, Doobie Brothers, KISS, I buy their albums when they come out.

That all sounds very complicated...

Well as you pointed out upthread:

"This next part should really confuse things.
Everybody let’s stay focused."

This is a seriously quotable album. Added bonus.

I'm gonna be tellin' people to 'stay frosty' for months!:p

But don't think I'm not toying with the idea of flying down to CA. I have a cousin in San Francisco...... ;)

There you go. They're playing in both Oakland and San Jose in June.

Are the tickets selling out yet?

Oh...and add She's The Woman and Blood and Fire to my ever-expanding 'favorites' list. I'm now up to SEVEN 'favorite songs' on this record.

I checked Ticketmaster. There are still tickets left, but they're pretty far back. There's always the Platinum Seat option. Front row for $995!

:techman:

"I wandered out West, to the California Coast
Where the folks who know about frostiness, stay frostiest the most!"

2. Runnin' With the Devil
3. She's The Woman
4. Romeo Delight
5. Tattoo
6. Everybody Wants Some!

Sorry I wasn't around this weekend - had an apartment-related crisis.

Anyway, that's an interesting set list. I guess I expected to see more of the new stuff though...

Does VH have the habit of playing the same set list for every show? I'm a huge Pearl Jam fan, and they change it up for every single show, but I know plenty of bands change it only a bit...and some not at all.

^ Who knows? They might, if the US tour goes okay. They might be trying to be cautious and see if Dave and Eddie can continue to play nice before they make longer term plans.

My personal hope is that those two guys will finally realize for good that they are 5 times better together than either one of them is separately. This album, while new, shows the sort of energy that I used to love about this band 25 years ago (jeez, that sure makes us sound old!) and no...I don't think that has much to do with the fact that some of the songs on the record are re-written unreleased material from those days. The two of those guys have some sort of odd love-hate synergy that seems to work when it comes to generating music the fans love....so I really hope they can continue to put their differences aside.

I mean, does anyone even remember what their 'differences' even were? It was so long ago.....

Although I always sort of preferred DLR (for the same sorts of reasons I love William Shatner! ), I've never had anything against Sammy Hagar - he just stepped into a slot already vacated by DLR - he didn't cause the split.

That said, however, he's starting to sound sort of 'sour grapes' these days....which I don't think will win him any favor with long-time VH fans.

Speaking only for myself...I am really, really HAPPY for Van Halen, to be having this much success and attention. And I'm especially happy for Eddie Van Halen. Cleaning up your act is not an easy thing to do when you have the sort of money and access he has always had. And I'm really pleased for him that not only has he cleaned up his act...but that his amazing talent is back, full force. The man is still the most amazing guitarist on the planet...and that makes me all warm and happy inside. For HIM, just as much as for us, if that makes any sense.

My B-Day wish came true Thursday. ADKoT has been playing pretty much non-stop. If there was ever any question as to if Ed still has it or not, just watch The Downtown Sessions. Still amazing as ever.

To follow up on my pre-release thoughts. There is not a single track that I feel needs to be passed over. Listening from 1 to 13 is usually how I have been rolling. However, I have found myself queing up Outta Space, Stay Frosty, and Big River as stand alones every now and then. I also have to admit that Tattoo has really grown on me. What I once thought was the weekest of ADKoT really doesn't fit that definition for me anymore. Tattoo is actually very solid and catchy. I don't think ADKoT really has any week links.

Great job Van Halen. Its a pleasure to have you back! :techman:

I've really been enjoying You and Your Blues a lot lately. It has that classic VH feel to it.

I think Honeybabysweetiedoll is the only weak track. The rest is chock-full of rich, juicy rock goodness.

Heh. I know a guy at my Pearl Jam board who loves this song - his favorite on the record. And I myself like it just fine, although it's not a favorite.

That is the most awesome thing about this album, IMO - something for everyone, every single song is loved like crazy by some people, and there is no universal agreement on a weak track. I honestly don't think there IS a weak track on this album - I think it's just a matter of personal preference among good tracks.

I've now listened to this record about 20 times, and I have to say that it's gonna be tough for anyone to put out a record that will beat this one for my favorite album of 2012. And I say that has a HUGE Springsteen fan with an album dropping next week.

This album sets the bar very high for this year. The last album I felt this this way about was Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare that was released in the summer of 2010...and that band includes the guy who would get my vote for Eddie Van Halen's heir-apparent....so there you go.
