USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

By that standard, they can make Vulcans red, with no ears, six foot tales and eat their vegetables through a port in their stomachs. Once you've changed the look, you've changed the universe.
Well no because that would change later stories completely. They’d also need to change the Romulans to match.

Red Vulcans wouldn't change their story. :)

Wasn't Spock supposed to be a red-skinned martian at first?

(Checks Star Trek Compendium in the shelve)

Yes, yes he was.

Much like Xenomorph-Klingons, we'll just ignore it. Because it being "Prime" seems to be more important than the universe making sense.

Nothing about the new Klingons changes future stories. They still act and talk like Klingons.

That's not it, Bill. It's a question of what the authors say it is. The Prime universe has had quite a few contradictions and visual changes over the years. I'm just trying to understand what's the threshold of what constitutes "too much" for you.

Also Klingon makeup changing isn’t new. The Klingons in TMP onwards looked and acted absolutely nothing like the TOS Klingons, yet people accepted them all the same.

Yeah, before DS9 I never heard anyone ask for an explanation for the change. In fact, DS9 may be responsible for a higher form of nitpicking by fans, on this issue and others.

That should have nothing, zero, zilch to do with it. The author who helped make Spock the character he is, says he is an only child. The author who helped create Enterprise has said it is an alternate timeline. What the Discovery people say lasts only as long as they are in charge. And is only applicable to the people working on the show or tie-in material.

I think if you honestly see it as the Prime timeline, then I respect that is how you choose to interpret it. I think if you're just parroting the CBS line, then I really have no respect for that position.

I imagine you weren't around during that time. It will be interesting to see fan reaction if they force that look on Worf or other popular Klingons.
Sorry I should have said ‘eventually accepted it or moved on’

Star Trek online is going to have TNG style Klingons interacting with DSC style Klingons, under CBS approval. So who knows.

Yes, we agree. That's exactly what I meant. The people making the show decide what it is until someone else takes over. It's been like that for Trek since 1964.

Shoulda, coulda, didn't. It's just the way it works.

Well, no. People get meaning and interpretations different from what the author intended all the time. If we didn't, we wouldn't have whole college courses dedictated to interpreting the meaning of art.

Yes, but since your (or my) interpretation is personal, the only official one we have is from the author. It's a safer bet for me to rely on that than on yours, then.

I would like you to answer my request about what constitutes "too much" of a change for you, though.

So, how do you deal with contradictions between official interpretation and on-screen stuff or official interpretation and other official interpretation?
