USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

You're doing it again. You're mistaking "what trends are currently in" for what actual, real people think out there in the audience.

Yeah it does. Things do not stay in still people are not buying into. The current tread is over a decade old and used pretty much everywhere. The time of the Atomic Age styling being mainstream left in the middle of last century man.

Neither you nor I are being paid by CBS to do marketing for Star Trek. We're audience members. So why on earth should we care about "growing the brand," or any other business-school buzzwords?

What I care about is the quality of the product, as an aesthetically appealing piece of entertainment (and, in the case at hand, as a part of the larger Star Trek lore). Being a slave to current trends is not an effective way for any Star Trek project to meet this standard.

Because trek dies if it does not grow. We know from CBS pre Kelvin the average age of a Trek fan is 40+ years old. It is not buzzwords, its freaking business. You must grow your brand or it dies, this is simple fact. You have to bring in new fans and that will simply not happen if it looks super dated. I know you do not want to hear that, but its a simple fact man.

Is it wrong to love both the original and the new design from Discovery?

We don't need to pick sides or anything do we?

Checking for a friend...

You can like both, I know folks who do. The issue is some folks want to force DSC to look like TOS and that is asking for it to fail.

So, being a slave to the past is better?

I genuinely don't know anymore.

I'll just say quantum.

Exactly. CBS has models and datasets to support their choices, good, bad and everything in between.

And STD is accomplishing nothing in that regard. It is not, to use the buzzwords, "growing the brand."

Better luck next time.
You keep repeating this doom and Gloom, yet CBS, Netflix and a few other people say you are incorrect. A group that tracks feed back and buzz about shows ranked DSC higher than the walking dead at the time of its final. It has , by all marks hit and exceeded CBS's expectations.

You have nothing to back your claim other than the desire to see it fail.

He choose to ignore the fact trek's style has always went with the current sci-fi design trends. Look at it by decade and you can see this clearly. It matches the style of other sci-fi products of the time.

Yeah, everything we have heard from CBS, Netflix and groups that trek buzz seems to show DSC not only meet to mark, but exceeded it.

Pay attention.

It's not going to fail. It's helping CBS make the subscription numbers on their streaming service, which fits their business model and earns them money.

Just as Hawaii 5-O and Blue Bloods fit their broadcast strategy.

None of which amounts to a hill of beans unless you're a stockholder. ;)

New Star Trek is a mighty fine hill of beans for me.

And that's all they need, a few million undemanding consumers already attached to the brand.

It's not quite a genius move, but in retrospect it was a pretty shrewd bet.

I think for the franchise it being made into another season is, well, actually not special but IS a productive move. However I haven't heard any hard facts about its ratings success. Just lip-service about how people are talking about it.

As a streaming show, ratings are not the issue, nor are they tracked. CBS and Netflix both have stated it was preforming above expectations. You will never get hard numbers and it does not have ratings. Forbes did have a story on it a while back by a group who tracks things like Buzz and fan talk of shows and it was doing very well.

Even from people who "hate it" there is still buzz and talk.

Forcing DSC to keep cranking out mediocre stories is asking for it to fail. If every starship in the series resembled the TOS/DS9/ENT Connie it wouldn't fail because of that aesthetic choice, and if a show is tanked and killed off because the spaceships in it don't look like something out of a modern Ridley Scott film or Xbox game then all I can say is the audience are simpleminded fools and I don't want our popular entertainment to always be determined by people that easily annoyed and offended.
