USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

You know TOS was cancelled in part because it was so bloody expensive right? NBC has two expensive shows in Star Trek and Mission: Impossible and chose the latter.

TOS, while having to be creative with its budget, was not a “cheap” show at its time.
I know that...but I'm saying at the time they could make due with what they have. I love TOS and it's look. I don't have a problem with them. I use the word cheap loosely not literally.

And possibly the Andorians, you can see one in the 'next time' trailer that looks pretty normal.

TNG Andorians or riot.

I wonder, could this be a reconfiguration to modify a Constitution-class starship with a Spore Drive? Could the Empire be slightly ahead in some areas because they don't care about safety all that much as seen in the past with them having more NX-class ships and Trip (mirror) having delta radiation scars.

Nah, what we are seeing is what the crew thinks is a Constitution. Script wise, it was clearly meant to be the same unmodified ship. The Empire got its tech by stealing it, first from the Vulcan and other races and then from the Federation. They do not seem to really innovate. They had no need to improve the design and likely could not until maybe the last 10 years or so.

I'd not read too much into how the characters react to the image, one way or another. The picture was probably inserted in post production, a long time after the episode was filmed, so intentions and designs may have changed.

Except in the one department they'd care most about - beefing up its offensive capability.

Unlikely to need it. The connie is a warship by design, a heavy cruiser that could outfight other peoples warships 20 years after it was built. She was over powered for the era, a big nasty brawler. It was already more advanced than anything the empire had and way more firepower than needed.

I just realized James Bond wore a Rolex Submariner in Dr No but now he's switched to Omega Seamaster! Unwatchable. Barf! The Rolex Submariner was a timeless classic! They even have one in a museum, somewhere I guess. I can't watch James Bond anymore.

:guffaw:

Because, if it's one thing that empires have showed us over the course of history is that there is such a thing as too much firepower...right?

You're forgetting; the Defiant ended up becoming Empress Sato's vessel -- or so we are led to believe. It would make perfect sense in the context of the mirror universe that the Empress' or Emperor's personal flagship have more teeth than the rest of the fleet.
Initially, sure. Not a hundred years after the fact.

They had all the firepower they needed. It was unlikely they had the skills to upgrade it until recently. The Empire kept pace with the Federation in terms of tech, because they had Federation tech. The ships we see do not seem more advanced, or more upgraded, they are the same as the federation ships of the same class. The reason being pretty obvious, they had all the plans for those ships from the Defiant memory core.
