USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

It's so mean looking

Its funny really, if you look at it head on like that its almost like they decided to give it a face, normally it would just be a smooth rounded edge like we see on the leading edge of the saucers on most Starfleet ships.

Essentially the ship is a small deep saucer (think 6" Deep Pan Pizza) with housings on either side for the nacelles, sometimes I get the impression that Starfleet designers don't really have any imagination at all.

It looks all right to me and its very hard to tell where the bridge is located which is another intelligent defensive attribute.

All it needs is Knight Riders red (or blue even) scanning effect on the dark strip underneath where it says NX-74205.

The Enterprise J would look a bit better if it's saucer was a perfect circle instead of a oval and lose the NX style deflector dish.

I think it's a pretty good looking ship, actually. It comes across as imposing and yet elegant. My main complaint would be that its profile is excessively flat.

I honestly don't know what you mean by "just so very basic." As for "detail," I suppose you'd prefer more greebles?

Um, no thank you.

In some ways it looks too insect-like to me from the saucer on back. On the other hand, I can remember Walter Cronkite describing the lunar module Eagle as a "spindly-legged craft" in his dramatic account of the descent to the surface of the moon. And that resonates. So I am kind of split on this one.

We barely saw it in the episode and it was probably designed very quickly. I'm surprised I haven't seen a more detailed fan rendering. Personally, I like it. It seems like it's pretty much a gigantic, far future mashup of NX-01 and Enterprise D elements.
