USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Thus far, the arguments have gone circular, with no willingness on either side to actually meet the other side in any sense of a middle ground. Seriously, need a Neutral Zone on this one.
On a subject like this a middle ground doesn't really exist, its all just personal preference even though there will always be those who stamp their feet and insist that their point of view is correct.

Personally I am glad they redid the 1701 as the ToS model looks far too basic when shown alongside the Discovery and other Starfleet vessels, it would just look ridiculous, the original ToS model so advanced and new in the 1960's but it is half a century old now and was never going to be good enough for a new show, plus it would look tiny next to the Discovery which would be stupid.

I like what they have done with the new look 1701, they have updated the design and brought it more in line with what we have seen so far in Discovery while still being instantly recognisable as a Constitution class ship.

All those complaining about the changes should understand that it could have been much worse, for instance the new 1701 does look bigger than the original but not to the extent that the Kelvin 1701 is.

I would have been fine if they had used the Kelvin 1701 in the show, so perhaps some should be counting their lucky stars.

At the end of the day, I'm satisfied with Discovery's interpretation of the Enterprise/Connie, but I think if they left it untouched it would have been fine too. These are pics of the 11 footer before it received it's restoration inserted into the movies. I think it looks great. Picture credits goes to Nick Acosta.

Daaayum!
That looks nice! I mean, I might be biased, because that's "my" first Enterprise. But holy cow, does it look good!

True to the casual viewer anything that looks vaguely like this is the Enterprise

Indeed. I mean, most people can differentiate her from, say, the Ent-D or the Excelsior. And I'd say everyone who is at least vaguely more familiar with Trek can even identify the TOS-one, the refit, and the Kelvin-movie one, despite probably not being able to tell the exact differences in between them.

But IMO, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find anyone outside the hardcore fan-base knowing the difference between Pikes "the cage"-Enterprise and Kirks "regular" one from TOS.

As far as I'm concerned, what appeared at the end of Discovery season 1 WAS the Enterprise. The classic one from TOS. Period. A little bit changed, and I found most of the changes annoying, because I think they were unnecessary. But it definitely was the original Enterprise, and probably every viewer catched that.

So while I may complain about some things (the shorter neck and reduced height is stupid, and I don't like either the new bridge window or the TMP-style nacelles), they did their jobs very well. It's IMO their best design job since the phaser/tricorder/communicator-design of DIS.

He meant from the 1960s this one, which according to folks in this thread would look modern

You know? For a reboot of "Lost in Space" they absolutely need to change that design.
BUT! If they were doing, say, "Lost in Space: The Next Generation", were the actors from the original have cameos as their old rolse, it would be pretty weird if they used any other design than this for their flashbacks.

I liked that NuBSG used TOS BSG’s cylon designs for the first Cylon War.

Though it helps that their ships were very “detailed” in the original show.

Possible scene from S02E01:

PIKE: "I can't believe we just spent the last 15 months completely rehauling the ship in order to take on the Klingons, only for the Klingons to unexpectedly retreat and sue for peace. I swear, when I become Fleet Captain, I'm changing the ship back!"

TrekYards seems to have a fan made model

I feel like the secondary hull tapers more than that, and there's got to be something wrong with that neck.

It does look off. I have not watched the vid as it will be 20 to 30 mins of compliaing about the redsign and people not "understanding" the TOS design.

That said, its not a bad first try at all.

Hell, that's better writing than we got in some episodes of the actual series.

Kind of looks like a bluescreen, but I don't see Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor clowning around in the shot so it can't be.

Other than maybe the engines and pylons that new trekyards model looks absolutely nothing like the ship we saw on the show
Especially that horrible profile view
They admited as much during the review
Better to wait on the actual model to be released
Gonna happen sooner or later
