USS Discovery in TOS?

TOS fans don’t like anything.

They’re the grouchy old men of the franchise, shaking their fists at all the young kids on their lawn...

It’s fascinating that you say this in the TOS forum and it isn’t considered trolling. The standards around here have loosened quite a bit.

But then again, I don’t like anything. :P

So? Are you saying no elements from TOS can appear in other productions? That's absurd.

Sure it did. We just saw a season long storyline about it. It happened prior to TOS so how could it show up on TOS?

You do realize events can be added to the timeline of the universe before, after and in between TOS, right? Because...fiction.

Well considering that DSC is yet another alternate reality in Star Trek, it doesn't matter one bit to me! :nyah:

The DSC has too much of a 70s "brutalist" aesthetic for my tastes... all hard edges and sharp angles. I don't really like the McQuarrie/Adam "Planet of the Titans" ship concept that inspired the design, either.

I prefer the streamlined TOS look; just the right balance of angles and curves.

yes it is a visual reboot, but not a lore reboot.
What about the lore is being rebooted? The characters and events are the same, the visuals have been updated to a modern aesthetic.
Is that enough to claim that the series should exist in it's own timeline? Quite possibly

It matters, that much is obvious.

Well you'd think that but to be honest I'll never buy the series if it comes out on DVD like I've never purchased Enterprise either! I'm only really interested in the Treks that I have sitting on my shelf and I'm only posting about this one now because it's currently on Netflix and the like! Once it's over I'll probably never watch it again so...

Maybe it's own timeline has changed due to the effects of the temporal cold war as seen in ENT! That might explain the great differences between TOS and DSC?

Not sure how that connects to what I said.

Whomever owns Star Trek can define it in any way they choose. They can say Kirk is a ten year old girl and Spock is a kangaroo and the only thing you can do is say screw this, I don't accept it, and I won’t watch your convoluted hack job of a discontinuous mess. But in fairness, in order to stay pertinent, the thing has to grow and change and evolve with time. The merit of any new incarnation should thus be measured not only by its continuity with the original, but also by whether it fits its time as well as the original did its. There is a necessary balancing act in order for any new show to be taken seriously, and debate about its merits might best be focused on those questions.
