I still think Shatner's in this.

The week the trailer premieres, we have an "exchange" between Shat and Abrams about why Kirk can't appear in the film.

Something's up, despite what some folks are saying.

No, it really isn't.

He's not in the movie.

Prove it, friend.

"Never give the people what they want"

Are you kidding? For a series that has been teetering on the brink of no longer being relevant for 15 years why would you want to further alienate an already fractured fan base?

If 70% of the general public (mind you that is the stated target audience for this film)would prefer to have Shatner in it as Kirk (remember to vast majority of people only know Star Trek as Kirk + Spock plus some TNG thrown in)why not give them what they want?

I understand what Meyer was saying as far as pandering to an audience and I agree with him, but this is a special case. They are trying to save this commercially dying franchise. I say give the people what they want in this case.

"remember to vast majority of people only know Star Trek as Kirk + Spock"

Kirk + Spock
Kirk + Spock
Kirk + Spock
Kirk + Spock
Kirk + Spock

Not

Shatner + Spock
Shatner + Spock
Shatner + Spock
Shatner + Spock
Shatner + Spock

Shatner is not in the movie. :D

I think you're giving this little Internet poll WAY too much credibility. It's just a poll that anyone online can vote on, tacked on for fun at the end of an Entertainment article. It's scarcely a reliable indicator of what the "general audience" really wants. For that you would need to use more scientific polling methods, not something as sketchy as this. Hell, I could log on another computer and vote on it again if I were so inclined.

Edited to add: Looks like the poll is at 66% now. Maybe you should change your title? ;)

And I'll bet that at least 70% of the people who took that poll are Trekkies, and not this notorious "general public" we speak of. I don't think the average American cares enough.

Why are the BBKers so ardent about getting Shatner in the film?

They have brought back Kirk, after all. And as he's played by that twentysyomething youngster Chris Pine, there's the potential for more Kirk for decades to come.
I suspect that the Bring Back Kirk people are really just the Bring Back Shatner people. It's not so much Kirk that they want back but Shatner playing Kirk is what they want.

Now it only says 66% (out of 2,158 votes). Though the exact question is: "Are you disappointed Shatner isn't in the upcoming 'Star Trek' film?"

I voted that I am not disappointed... I don't care if he isn't in the film. I would rather him not be there than for a ridiculous method for resurrecting him being used....

From this poll, I've realized something about teh Internets:
