Should have been:
E-1 Guardian Basic
E-2 Guardian
E-3 Guardian First Class
E-4 Senior Guardian

It's hard to imagine how much an 18 year old kid in basic training can be "specialized," but I suppose it will do.

I argue that a raw recruit can't be expected to be anything other than specialised. For the simple reason that they haven't had enough time to learn more than one or two related complex topic.

The should have mixed it up
Recruit
Private
Private 1st Class
Corporal
Petty Officer 2nd Class
Petty Officer 1st Class
Chief Petty Officer
Master Sergeant
First Sergeant
Sergeant Major
Ensign
Lieutenant
Major
Lt Colonel
Colonel
Commodore
Rear Admiral
Major Admiral
Admiral

:p

In the US system, recruit training is the process of making a break with civilian life and teaching the basics of how to fit in and function in the military world. Being trained in one's specialty (MOS, AFSC, rating) comes later. That's why when the Army had multiple specialist grades, they started at E-4, they didn't end there.

Why was that ever a thing?

Somebody though it would be cool, I guess.

Actually they took one tiny step toward inter-service uniformity by making E-5 buck sergeant like the Army and Marines, rather than staff sergeant as in the AF. The master sergeants still don't line up, though.

Since they are apparently not using warrant grades, I wonder how they'll handle Army WOs who transfer in? A W-1 will become an O-1, a W-2 will become an O-2 etc. would be my guess.

just as there are coast guardsmen/guardswoman, they could have had space guardsmen/guardswoman

the guardian thing sounds silly
