I agree. The line is definitely "Romulan Ambassador Nanclus." The only reason it is so ambiguous is because Nimoy and Catrall are not speaking the word in unison. So a two-syllable word sounds like it has three, and the only phonetics that come through clearly are "an-us-us," which the ear can easily interpret as "and others."

And frankly, the phrase "and others" in that particular context would sound awkward. It lessens the drama of specifcally naming the conspirators. Not to mention the question of why Kirk would stop asking for names when Valeris comes right out and admits that there are additional unidentified accomplices.

But why would she put that out there in the first place? It's when she can't cough up any more names that Spock goes to the double-handed mind-meld which causes her so much pain. Why throw out "and others" when you don't know the answer to "and others," and you know it just means Spock will go rooting around in your brain even more forcefully?

fascinating. I have a list of probably 9 solid Trek-based reasons I hate this movie. But still, not having seen it in so long ... (I refuse to own it beyond the old VHS copy I can't even play anymore).

I have to say I'm really surprised to see all of the negative comments about this film. While it is definitely far from perfect, I've always enjoyed it a great deal and seen it as a great send-off for the original cast.

My copies of ST6 all have shitty soundtracks, and none is the "flashes of villain faces" version, so I can't help much in terms of offering another subjective truth. But "And others" and "Nanclus" both sound like perfectly valid interpretations, and the latter basically has become the de facto truth now that every third novel out there is calling that Ambassador by that name.

Just to clarify this: There is no dispute about the Romulan Ambassador's name, since he was referred to as Nanclus earlier in the movie.

This is only about the mind meld scene. In the SE she only says "the Romulan Ambassador", then we get the flash of Nanclus instead of her additional words.
