Unpopular TUC View

My copies of ST6 all have shitty soundtracks, and none is the "flashes of villain faces" version, so I can't help much in terms of offering another subjective truth. But "And others" and "Nanclus" both sound like perfectly valid interpretations, and the latter basically has become the de facto truth now that every third novel out there is calling that Ambassador by that name.

Just to clarify this: There is no dispute about the Romulan Ambassador's name, since he was referred to as Nanclus earlier in the movie.

This is only about the mind meld scene. In the SE she only says "the Romulan Ambassador", then we get the flash of Nanclus instead of her additional words.

In all previous versions she says "the Romulan Ambassador, and others". Most people here believe that she said "Nanclus" instead of "and others", and I have given up on convincing them otherwise. But if you pay close attention and watch her lips, you should be able to clearly hear and see her saying "and others". Especially the "th" in "others" you can not ignore.

Even the subtitles on the single DVD edition say "and others"!

But if anyone prefers to hear "Nanclus", I don't care anymore.

I agree with you. She said 'and others'. :techman:
True.

Arrogant much??

If 95% of Trek fans on this board give it 3 stars or up and you dismiss these people as 'accepting' anything it is YOU who are disrespectful of peoples opinions.
Time has made its judgement of TUC. It is considered a good, solid entertaining movie with some flaws. Most movies have them. Most trek movies have them. A vocal minority of apparently 5% trying to tell others that it is shit and crap and worthless is laughable.

But go ahead sit here in this thread and recite every error & mistake and little bit you find objectionable and see hoiw many people you convince.

In fact spend all your time doing so. I and most others will pop this in the player every once in a while and have a good time watching it.

By the way, when i recently joined, I voted on the TOS movie ratings....

I noted that TUC has the least percentage of people who give it 1 or 2 stars--so in fact, TUC is the 'least disliked' TOS movie. Higher percentages gave 1 or two stars even to TWOK or TVH. TUC has just under 5% one or two stars while TFF has a whopping 55% who give it 1 or 2 stars !!! But from what I read here it seems that TFF has more boosters than TUC. I think alot of people must vote who don't jump in on these discussions.

As for the Nanclus....

The script reads Nanclus & I hear Nanclus, but folks will argue that the actors don't always follow the script exactly or changes are made.
This is an argument that can't be won here.
It likes the "Honors hup" from TWOK.
The script reads it that way, the sub-titles also and he is clearly saying that, but trying to sound all broken up. But some folks want to push their opinion no matter what and they'll never change their mind. It's pointless.

Maybe a certified lip-reader can be called in. But if the expert opinion came back against them--they'd just say it was later 'looped' to the way they hear it and so they're still right.

I don't have to worry about the line because I just watch the SCE DVD of TUC, but there's another point that I haven't seen made yet. There is probably more than one Romulan ambassador. They have one on Earth, and they likely have one on the Klingon homeworld. She may have had to say Nanclus to clarify which ambassador is in the conspiracy.

Don't you think that is because it delivers the most movie-like flick of the bunch (I'd put TWOK in as the exception, but TWOK is all on soundstages except the last minute, so it seems kinda unmovie like in that way.)

TUC delivers on a base level ... but doesn't bear any scrutiny, whereas the others, you can pick 'em apart, but you also see textures and 'nice tries' when you examine them. TUC is pretty surface. So it might be the safest TOS flick.

TVH also delivers mostly on base level, but I dislike TVH more than TUC (and I dislike SFS nearly as much for squandering a great opportunity to do something good ... yeah, I'm one of those guys who likes TFF.)

.

Takei is clearly saying "Odo's Pup."

It was an advance crosspromotion for Deep Space Nine. Anyone with half a brain could see that. Check out the Youtube clip and play it frame by frame. You can totally tell!!

"Odo's pup" ??----you fool

It was well-established months ago here in this forum he was saying, "Order Up"---he was taking orders for the post-funeral reception.

Kirk had bologna and a hard roll, while Saavik had 'assorted vegetables' & McCoy had some black coffee. David had a banana, Carol a bratwurst, Sulu a hot dog and Chekov a Pizza which was invented in Russia by the way. Scotty, a bit of each and some other stuff.

Scotty: Are ye gonna eat all of that, Laddy?

Sulu: This hot doggy is mine and mine alone..Oh..MY...

Chekov: Dees pepperoni reminds me of Leningrad.

Funny, I always thought Nanclus beginns with a 'N' not an 'A'... silly me...
"N" and "L" don't have a defined mouth shape like a vowel. It's all tongue position. So "Nan" and "An" can look identical when watching lips.

Because she did. Here: http://www.washingtonheightswarlord.com/whoelse.wma

At the risk of beating a dead horse...I listened to the link given there, and I'll be damned if it doesn't sound like "and others". I very well could be wrong, I'm not going to make any claims others than I can see where confusion could arise from on the matter.

Nanclus. That sounds nothing like "And others" to me. If it weren't for this thread, I'd never even consider it.

As with most mysteries, this one's not as good once you know who the culprits are. But all in all an enjoyable film and special to me for being the classic cast's last movie together.
