Uniforms not getting enough attention.

I thought they were great too, and at the risk of derailing this thread into the depths of heck, their successful use in a major, modern motion picture tells me that they could have stuck a little closer to the original designs of the bridge and the outer ship design too.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the flick and I realize it will help re-invigorate the franchise, but I worry they may have alienated too many older fans.

I liked how they are not the only uniform, but a shipboard uniform. The only ones I didn't like were the ones worn by the Admirals at Kirk's hearing.

I actually missed the little pirate-syle flare on the pants they had on TOS. There was something really cool and dashing about that look, and the new uniforms looked kind of weird without them.

Yeah, didn't like those either; they looked like they were made of wall-carpeting.

They did a great job with the slightly-retro look (in particular, they made the very dated miniskirts look somewhat plausible).

Quite a shock...I would have sworn these uniforms would not work...but they do.

I had the opposite reaction. I would have sworn up and down that the original uniforms were the way to go... but in the film I thought they looked too much like pajamas. Pike, in particular, looked much better in his academy uniform.

I also really like the new uniforms. Colours? PERFECT IMO. Star fleet symbol pattern. I hadn't noticed. I'll look for it on my third viewing. :D i do think it'll be kind of tough for Kirk to run around showing his chest as much though which was a cool character trait in TOS.

I wouldn't go as far as calling them pajamas, but I agree they might have looked a little too... informal. Especially coming after those really spiffy and formal looking uniforms of the last few TNG movies.

I would have at least gone for a stiffer kind of material.

Thumbs up on the new uniforms, and I also liked how they appeared to be for shipboard wear with more formal duds being worn dirtside and around the Academy, etc. The cadet uniforms were spiffy too.

One little 'wrong font' gripe:

I didn't like the striping on the shipboard uniforms. Two things:

1. They needed to keep the braid gold, instead of silver, and;
2. They needed to keep a broken stripe instead of using a thin stripe. The 'captain' rank stripes now look like a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander's stripes instead of a Starfleet captain's. The solid-broken-solid captain's striping was something that has always stood out to me as 'uniquely starfleet' with regards to TOS.

OTOH I'm glad they kept the sleeve striping instead of reverting to pips like all post-TOS Trek did.

I noticed this evening that the Kelvin uniforms come in more subdued variations of the three Starfleet colors: there are dusky blue, olive green and brown versions (as well as white for medical staff).

Has anybody got a good, detailed shot--preferably full-body--of Pike's black planetside uniform? I'm trying to do a drawing, and I need a high-quality reference.

i loved the uniforms. The primary colors really helped the crew stand out against the new Bridge etc. by providing some contrast.

I thought the silver rank stripes worked, because it melded the TOS uniforms with the new Bridge aesthetic.

I gotta say as well that the Uhura character, portrayed as a strong, smart, and independent woman in total control of her own sexuality, can easily pull off the “short skirt” look that the original series was often chastised for. In so doing: depict a future where humans are fully capable of being sexual beings while still able to operate as professional officers along side one another in the field. A good nod, if perhaps an indirect one, that the future Roddenberry was trying to conceive in his original vision, is one of equality and a healthy respect between race, sexuality, ideology, and gender. A illustration of a society that can evolve beyond such self-important needs, in balance with that very spice of life which keeps our hearts, body, and minds thirsty for adventure... all notions of which the original concept of Star Trek was built on.

Loved the TOS-style uniforms. Didn't expect them, but that was perfect.

And has anyone mentioned the fact that the pattern on them is made up of little Starfleet deltas?

Except for the female uniforms not having any sleeves for rank insignia which I found to be a gross oversight, I though the uniforms were utterly great. As for which colour I'd like for myself ... hm .. lemme think ...

I really liked the uniforms. I thought the blue shirt looked particularly sharp. Making the rank stripes silver makes sense to me--it's easily discernable on all three colors. Gold braids on gold shirts (yes, I know they weren't technically gold shirts) never made a lot of sense to me. I agree with xman that making the female miniskirt variant sleeveless with no noticeable rank insignia was a mistake, though.

However, I thought that the red and black Academy uniforms were by far the best.

Ditto.
