Uniforms in the new series

Don't see any reason Chekov can't be a captain too. Maybe all the principal characters hold captain's rank in the next movie.

Oh, come on, Kirk and Spock must both be Fleet Admirals by then.
Well, obviously. Both Admiral Pike and Admiral Marcus were killed in the last film, plus who knows how many flag officers in Khan's attack and the Vengeance crash.

I personally prefer TOS rank stripes, in some form. I find them to be simple enough to read, and depending on the design, can be subtle or highly visible, and placed on the uniform in a variety of places. They could be on the sleeve, either low or high, on the shoulder or use shoulder boards.

I agree. My choice would be stripes, too.

I like rank stripes as well; I wonder what a uniform could look like if the stripe ranks were posted on the bicep area?
Maybe Jesse1066 could take a crack at that; with his artistic skills.

Much as I liked the rank pip system of TNG for its simplicity and elegance (compare it to the complicated and difficult to see system on nuBSG), I think it is time to move on as it has now been on 4 variants of the uniform. 5 including Enterprise. Let's do something else. Back to stripes maybe, or something else innovative.

I liked the rectangular rank pips on STO. They line up nicely. I'd however replace hollow pips with narrow pips.

One thing that worked well were the com badges. An elegant little piece of equipment, and it was cool that they were part of the uniform.

They worked in the past but they should get rid of them, I'd combine the communicator with the tricorder, it would give the user more options than tapping and telling the thing who you want to talk to, like video communication or sending texts in case you don't want to draw attention to yourself.

I'd keep the pips/stripes whatever you want to call them in regards to rank. Colours would go back to red, yellow and blue as I prefer that personally over the more grey uniforms in Enterprise personally speaking.

Obviously there'd be some more modernised upgrades of the classic look of the uniforms but I think that's about it.

Grey? What show were you watching?

I'm wondering if Hairstyles and fashion should also be considered along with the uniforms the crew wears? TOS was keen on the look of women on the series.

I'm referring to hairstyles in complimenting the uniforms. Not particularly a fashion sense in wardrobe.

Not sure I agree; a tricorder/communicator would just look like a smart phone on screen and quickly date the show. I do agree the comm badge had practical limitations, especially from a privacy point of view, but these also served a dramatic purpose - you always knew who was talking to whom, and could hear both sides without having to film the other half and cut to it. Walkie talkie like gadgets are easier story telling devices than phones, basically. I suspect we'll still have something like them in Trek17.

Why must the communicator be pinned on the chest? I think the belt would be better - easier to reach, and you could have a larger unit with more capabilities.

If it's on the belt the camera would have to occasionally focus on the crotch of the characters as a visual que that they're speaking to someone through the communicator. Who wants to see Riker's crotch each week?

Being on the chest means a tighter shot on the upper body. Actors like face time.

You don't need to see a close-up of the comm being activated. Just a shoulder move and we'll understand what's happened.

I don't know if the world is ready for a show where the leads keep tapping their belt area all throughout the show...
