Uhura vs new Uhura

nuhura_vs_nichelle.jpg

I think they are both very beautiful women.

I agree!

I actually have NO preference for either. One is Uhura for TOS and One is Uhura for nuTrek.

Both are lovely women and played Uhura with that unspoken degree of poise and grace in their own way.

The only problem I had with new Uhura was the way she was forced into a very typical female role in an action movie. For example, in the bar scene on Earth, where Kirk gets beaten up by Uhura's fellow cadets, I objected to the idea that her "friends" had to come and ask, "is this guy bothering you?". Admittedly she tells her "friend" she can handle it, but Abrams has still turned her into the generic hot girl who starts a bar fight because everyone wants to get into her pants. For me, that set the scene for her being just another female character who functions primarily as a plot aid for the male characters.

The only thing that bothered me about that scene - and it's along the lines you suggest - is that she was ineffectual at putting a stop to the fight. She's relegated to "knock it off, he's had enough" while her buddies ignore her.

Cute screenname, BTW.

YES! That upset me too. I mean, I don't expect her to jump right in there fists flying, but I would have expected her to show a bit more fire than the typical, "oh, boys, stop!" line. I'm thinking particuarly of the scene in The Naked Time where Sulu bursts in brandishing a fencing foil, and shouts "I'll protect you, fair maiden!" - Uhura promptly responds with "Sorry, neither!"

Thanks, BTW :)

That's such a weird line. I know it's kind of famous now and a lot of people love it (as do I), but it doesn't sound natural to me. Uhura pretty much never said anything very interesting or witty, so how did she get this line? It's so funny, sassy, direct, and vague at the same time. It almost sounds like an ad-lib.

Oh, so very much agreed. I love both.
There is room in my heart for the two of them to live.
And anything else they might want to do while they're there.

It is. Nichelle Nichols threw it in as a reference to her being black, and a mother.
