Uhura vs new Uhura

OK, I just have to say, did anyone else not buy Uhura, supposedly a professional Starfleet officer, just up and kissing on Spock at that pivotal moment in the movie? It just didn't ring true to me. -- RR

I know. What happened to protocol in this movie?

I keep saying if they had left all the Uhura/Spock romance out of the film I would have really loved this movie.
I am a diehard TOS fan and know the series inside and out.
Even if this new universe has Spock give in to his emotions more, there is no way I can accept that he or Uhura would have behaved this way. And yes it was highly unprofessional to have all that smootchin going on!!!

I think, because they did not have Nurse Chapel (no time to introduce her anyway because of the way they had McCoy thrust into his position) that they had to go with the only other female available. I think I would have accepted Nurse Chapel better (more close to canon), but even she would not have fawned all over Spock in that way.
And it's annoying to watch Spock moon-eyed whenever he sees Uhura.
Because she's on the bridge, this could go on constantly.
That's why Chapel down in sickbay was less of a distraction. She was there to be in love with Spock, but did not hinder his actions.

Maybe Mattel had a deal going and wanted an excuse to make the Barbie dolls. They've got Kirk (Ken), Spock (Ken), and Uhura (Barbie).
'Nuff said.......(Ha, ha)

I too was repulsed by this "plot twist"...ughhhh! I had to look away from the screen because it's just WRONG! I also couldn't help but think of poor poor nurse chappy...never getting her due! They need to remove this element going forward....now I don't so much object to Spock being a little more emotional ...especially in his early life, but really....there's not one other cadet that this coulda gone down with? It had to be Uhura???

As far as new vs. old...well saldana is in a very different uhura role (obviously)...so we can't really compare. He facial expressions are cute and she's a fine enough actor but I didn't really get uhura from her...I'd have to say her and scotty were the least recognizable....so it's not necessarily bad...just different. But uhura's always going to be nichelle first and anybody else can come after.........

Ummm...do you people really pay attention when you watch movies? She just didn't go in there and kiss him. It is obvious they ALREADY had a relationship before that scene. She was there trying to comfort her lover; spock.

And frankly I am glad some of you are repulsed. That is the desired effect that PARAMOUNT wants. It wants fans, like you, to move away, leave the ship, get off board, and make way for new HIP fans who are not going to the movie JUST to see how many warp nacells are on a ship and what stardate it is or isn't...

The new Uhura is very pretty, but it's a bit like comparing a girl to a woman. Nichelle was a brick house. Maybe that's the look they were going for since she's supposed to be a bit younger.

Still, I think that's exactly right.

I also think the new Uhura was given more to work with in terms of her character and relationships with other characters.

And she is a FAR better actress than Nichelle Nichols ever was at this point in their respective careers. This, Zoe, has a good career going, and not just with Star Trek. Nichelle??? Big zero.

This new Uhura can act, and she is hot. She trumps Nichelle in every way. Thats how I see it, and the response she is getting from NORMAL-NON STAR TREK FANS proves it....na na na na na...

And this, this right here is the problem I have with this NuTrek crowd and why the movie repulses me. This is the absolute purest statement of 'fan hate' that possibly could be made. This should be framed.

Yeah I managed to pay attention thanks to the meds I took prior!

I realized they already had a "relationship"....whatever that word means when your partner is emotionally unavailable...LOL LOL I guess that is just like (more than) half the marriages in this country...but It's still inappropriate to be kissing "her man" at the transporter -- that is completely unprofessional...you're gonna tell me that you don't think that is? And if it's not can you get me a job at where your working LOL?

Oh so you're in the know at Paramount! Well can you tell them that their "plot twist" didn't work because I still like the movie aside from that....

I always felt that is exactly what Paramount was trying to do...drive the fans away that have made them sooo much money thru the years...us old washed up and used up fans who have dumped soooo much money in the merchandise...yeah I completely agree...thanks for confirming my suspicions.....and did you see in the end credits..the fine print...it said this movie is not inteneded for anyone over the age of 35 -- you really have to squint...but that disclaimer is there!

I never heard of her before this movie! Yes she is very beautiful....AND??? There are hot chicks all over the place...Sooo? You're acting like you're in high school!

In my opinon this Zoe is in fact a beautiful woman...but nothing special.....she looks like beyonce and Jada Smith...so we've all seen this look before...

She looks half white...is she?

Nichelle has make quite a comfortable living being the big zero of Star Trek as you so eloquently put that.

Excuse me? Fans like me? I am a very nice girl who happens to be a Star Trek fan of many years.
Please realize that the new movie was based on an old show that us fans have loved for years. If it wasn't for that show, this new movie would have never been made.
We liked the old show despite its lack of technology because they simply didn't have the technology back then to do what Gene Roddenberry would have liked to do.

And let me tell you about myself. I love the new Star Trek, too, and Star Wars, and Fringe. I loved Watchmen. I love old rock and roll (Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, AC/DC). Does that sound like a girl who is not hip?

And please realize too that this fan site has been around for a long time. We have been talking to each other about our show the same way fans discuss Star Wars.

Why did you come on this site anyway, to try to take over?
Do you wish that the Star Trek movie is yours alone?

Then tell all the many years of readers of Batman comics and Xmen comics and Spiderman comics and Watchmen graphic novels that they should all go away too because all those new movies are yours alone.

Please don't be mean spirited. There are a lot of very nice people on this website young and old and you might make some great friends to chat with. After all, you came on here. Are you a geek?

Oh, and by the way, I have been to Star Trek conventions (and before you think it, no, I am not a person that anyone would ever refer to as a "geek" either. I work with teenagers every day who love me).
Anyway, at the conventions (before this movie came out) there were a lot of what you call "hip" young teenage fans of the old shows.

Please be nice. And by the way, I'm not old. I don't think from the way you talk I would be attracted to you though. And I'm cute. Oh well, I guess you don't care who you bash.

I'd like to say "love ya" like I do to everybody else on here, but guess I'll just say..

Peace......

I think they are both very beautiful women.

I think they are both very beautiful women.

Agreed! :techman: Still, I prefer the original Uhura -- she and Barbara Eden from I Dream of Jeannie were my first TV crushes! -- RR

You'd love Nichelle's personality, too, if you met her in person. I met her at a convention autograph session and she is just lovely. We exchanged a little girl talk. She talked with me about her son Kyle. She was concerned about not looking the same as she once did and I told her she was still beautiful. After that, I went and bought some chunky jewelry like what she had on.

I'm from New York, too.

She looks half white...is she?

She's Dominican. She's got blood from all over.

That doesn't bother me. By the 23rd century, I imagine the United States of Africa will be as heterogeneous as the 21st century United States of America.

I just think she's way too skinny!

Thank you...Nah that doesn't bother me either and I agree that eventually our ethnicities will be watered down and really if you go back far enough in the human family tree we all are related...but that's another topic.

As I said earlier she is beautiful indeed...no doubt about it and she has very cute facial expressions...HOWEVER, she didn't come across as the Uhura I know AT ALL...not even a little....especially because of those facial expressions IMO..... So If I werent told that was Uhura then I may not of known that's who's she supposed to be playing.

The kissing on the transporter is justified, imo.

1. Uhura barely acknowledges that Kirk even deserves to be in command at that point so it's not like she's worried about looking unprofessional in front of him.

2. It's really not your typical situation. Spock is really messed up and needs her, having just lost his mother and entire freakin' planet.

3. There's about a 4.5% chance that either of them get through the mission alive, so this could be her last parting moment with him.

I like Nichelle Nichols, but Saldana's Uhura is already more of a character than TOS managed in the twenty-some years that those characters were active on screen. And Saldana is much hotter.

Also, Chapel actually was in the film, though off screen. At one point, I believe right before McCoy is talking to Spock over the comm explaining how the CMO was dead, you can just hear him scream, "Nurse Chapel!" I caught it on my second viewing.

And she even answers... :)

Hey, treklover -- howdy, fellow New Yorker. I heard all those good things about Nichols, too, about what a lovely woman she is. Saldana is a pretty good replacement, esp. as the writers are giving her more to do than just say, "Hailing frequencies open," but I still love the first Uhura much more. As someone else said, Saldana is a bit too thin for my tastes. But hey, to each his own! -- RR

Another thread which degenerated into "omg boobies!" waaaay too soon...

The only problem I had with new Uhura was the way she was forced into a very typical female role in an action movie. For example, in the bar scene on Earth, where Kirk gets beaten up by Uhura's fellow cadets, I objected to the idea that her "friends" had to come and ask, "is this guy bothering you?". Admittedly she tells her "friend" she can handle it, but Abrams has still turned her into the generic hot girl who starts a bar fight because everyone wants to get into her pants. For me, that set the scene for her being just another female character who functions primarily as a plot aid for the male characters.
I think someone mentioned that she acts more as a support for Spock than a character in her own right (apologies, can't remember who!), and I think I agree. She sits aside while the male characters go off and save the universe, and patiently waits for the lover to return from his perilous mission. Very safe role for a female character. I felt like original Uhura had a bit more spunk, and a bit more meat on her character, because she isn't instantly labelled as an object of desire (as new Uhura is in her first meeting with Kirk) or as a nice safe love interest for the protagonist to fight for (with new Spock). In TOS she is introduced to us primarily as the Comms Officer for the Enterprise, not as a potential love interest for the male crew.

The only thing that bothered me about that scene - and it's along the lines you suggest - is that she was ineffectual at putting a stop to the fight. She's relegated to "knock it off, he's had enough" while her buddies ignore her.

Cute screenname, BTW.
