Uhura vs new Uhura

Uhura is described in the original series writer's guide as being a citizen of "the United States of Africa" and in the Phase II writer's guide as being from "the African Confederacy." Kelso is right in that her citizenship and place of birth are not actually established "canonically" in TOS.

The Man Trap

The Changeling

Spectre of the Gun

Probably Tholian Web, too, in the props in her room.

Also Naked Time and Is there in truth no beauty in Sulu and Spock's comments

I don't recall any specific references to her having been born (or having lived) in Africa. The ability to speak Swahili is hardly conclusive... esp. considering her role as the communications officer. Neither is the possession of African artifacts.

Feel free to correct me if I've forgotten something.

Her native language is Swahili. Her first language is Swahili. Her ideal man speaks Swahili.

Swahili is a natively African language.

I think you'd have to jump through hoops to explain how Uhura *wasn't* from Africa.

Edit: I suppose you could argue she comes from a Swahili-speaking enclave in another country or on another planet. That's fine. But it's still African, just like the Yiddish-speakers of New York are still Jews.

And Occam's Razor (and the series bible) say she's from Africa.

^ Yeah, I agree with you that she is from Africa. My point was that it was never stated. As such, I don't believe that a lack of reference to her African origin would be a fault in the new film.

She clearly has an African origin. Whether she was born physically on African dirt was never said in the show.

You might as well say there's no canonical evidence that Spock is from Vulcan.

As a note, on the film's website under the Dossiers section, it mentions her origin as being "Africa", so although it's not mentioned in the film it's obvious the writers kept that in mind for her.

I just find Nichelle more exotic than Zoe. Which makes Nichelle seem more 'real' playing an african woman.

Plus Nichelle just has a smoother sounding voice.

What the heck does that mean? Playing an African woman? They have to have crazy accents and have animale bones in their noses? I would hope star trek fans would be beyond that...

Rob

Not to take anything away from Nichols, but in the original show, she more often-than-not played nothing more than Kirk's Receptionist. That is, when they had the budget to hire her.

The new character is the romantic female lead and the axis in the Kirk-Spock love triangle. This is the Uhura that some of us always secretly wanted to see.

Plus she still looks great in a minidress starfleet uniform, and that's really the bottom line.

I don't think that's a fair characterization of what was said. I've read a lot of the threads around here regarding a lack of blacks and Asians in science fiction and it seems that a lot of those people stress they do not want "colorblind" casting but want to see their cultures represented onscreen.

My wife is african-american. She read it the same way I did. That when ever a character is African in a story, they have to speak with a swahili accent or wear screwy ear rings...It is her hope, and mine, that by the time 300 years come around, we see things a bit more in the colorbline in terms of color and in mannerism. Its time to walk the walk comprende?

OK, I just have to say, did anyone else not buy Uhura, supposedly a professional Starfleet officer, just up and kissing on Spock at that pivotal moment in the movie? It just didn't ring true to me. -- RR

Old Uhura >>>> New Uhura.

I don't like how they made her slutty now. I like the classic, reserved Uhura.

I'm tired of Hollywood thinking that a woman has to be so sexual to be sexy. Classic Uhura was sexier because she didn't go flaunting herself around and making out with crew members.

Hollywood does not realize that there is a difference between the words 'sexy' and 'slutty'... and sadly, this permeates Trek as well. But, honestly, did anyone not see this coming? And it's not like VOY or ENT were above this...

I know. What happened to protocol in this movie?

I keep saying if they had left all the Uhura/Spock romance out of the film I would have really loved this movie.
I am a diehard TOS fan and know the series inside and out.
Even if this new universe has Spock give in to his emotions more, there is no way I can accept that he or Uhura would have behaved this way.

I think, because they did not have Nurse Chapel (no time to introduce her anyway because of the way they had McCoy thrust into his position) that they had to go with the only other female available. I think I would have accepted Nurse Chapel better (more close to canon), but even she would not have fawned all over Spock in that way.
And it's annoying to watch Spock moon-eyed whenever he sees Uhura.
Because she's on the bridge, this could go on constantly.
That's why Chapel down in sickbay was less of a distraction. She was there to be in love with Spock, but did not hinder his actions.

Maybe Mattel had a deal going and wanted an excuse to make the Barbie dolls. They've got Kirk (Ken), Spock (Ken), and Uhura (Barbie).
'Nuff said.......(Ha, ha)

Wow, apparently, being in love equates to being slutty to Trek fans. That's not propogating a stereotype, nooo.

How exactly was she slutty? Going around making out with the entire Academy? Nope, didn't happen. Everyone on the Enterprise? Didn't happen either. Her and Spock obviously developed a relationship during their time at the Academy, one that meant a great deal to them both. That is the opposite of slutty.

I did think at one point, though, "Damn, does she ever stay at her post?"

Also, Chapel actually was in the film, though off screen. At one point, I believe right before McCoy is talking to Spock over the comm explaining how the CMO was dead, you can just hear him scream, "Nurse Chapel!" I caught it on my second viewing.

I didn't find nuUhura to be slutty in the least.

Im with you...anyone who thinks that is totally out of it and..well..hopefully will let star trek go and never come back. I have said this before and I will say it again. If there are hardline fans who will stop watching star trek because (fill in the blank) then I hope the door doesn't slam them in the butt as they walk out that door....

The Enema has come....and I, being a fan for decades, am happy that at last TREK can really, really, start over and attract legions of new fans instead of catering to some, a hardcore I admit, who dont understand the need to be new and fresh.

As The Keeper said? You have your reality, Pike has his. May you both find happiness (or whatever)

Ummmm, with all due respects to Nichelle, I think this new Uhura is very sexy indeed. A product of her time, for sure. Slinky and sexy. But I have seen several pictures of her on the web now and...well...I like!!!

I agree as well. The new Uhura is more sexy and much better for the role.:)

And more importantly, now that I think about it....(and I'll whisper it since I will bring out the nay-sayers)...new-Uhura, after just once "episode", is the better actress...BY FAR
