Tyler Perry is ALEX CROSS

Starbreaker

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Well, I'm not a James Patterson fan. I've read a couple of his books and found them very generic, and not a fan of the movie adaptations, but this is just the most bizarre casting move ever. I'll HAVE to see this movie just to see Tyler Perry have more than a cameo that isn't Madea.

Actor Idris Elba was originally chosen to star in the reboot of the Alex Cross franchise with David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick)directing, but it appears that the project has undergone a bit of an overhaul.

Awww, damn it.

I havent read the books but I though the first Alex Cross film Kiss the Girls was a fine thriller..thanks to a good cast, particulary Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd:techman:
The second film Along Came a Spider on the otherhand is a quite lame movie, with relativly boring plot and lazy directing.
No wonder they didint do more of them with Freeman on the lead.
Cant say much of the upcoming film:shrug:..but I hope it will be good.
Though..wouldnt Alex Cross work better as an TV-series, with something like 2-3 episodes per book adaptation?

Morgan Freeman to...Tyler Perry?! What a bizarre juxtaposition. I love Kiss the Girls but Along Came the Spider was pretty lame, and I've never read the books, so I don't have a huge stake in this one way or the other.

Pity Idris Elba was passed over.

This is a pretty left-field bit of casting. I guess the closest equivalent I can think of is the backwards jump from Harrison Ford to Ben Affleck in the Jack Ryan movies. Apart from his cameo in Star Trek, I haven't seen Perry in anything where he wasn't Madea, so I really don't know what to say.

Kiss the Girls was great, Along Came a Spider good. But from Morgan Freeman to Tyler Perry? That like going from Harrison Ford to Ben Affle... oh wait, that already happened.

Maybe he'll play the role as Madea?

I don't think the casting is as bad as some of you make it out to be. However, Rob Cohen as director is what's got me uninspired about this movie.

That's going to be a crowded movie poster:

Tyler Perry's

I, Alex Cross

Based on the novel by James Patterson

Starring Tyler Perry

Idris Elba would have been perfect. I saw this story a few days ago and thought it was a joke. Morgan Freeman was too old to play Alex Cross when he played the role 10 years ago and Tyler Perry hasn't really done much beside Madea including his Trek 09 cameo.

Now that's scary. Has Cohen done anything that's more than just adequate? Tyler Perry's ok. I don't get the hate for him some have.

Rob Cohen used to direct things like Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, but now he's all XXX and Stealth and The Fast and the Furious mode.

Tyler Perry could be perfect as Alex Cross; we just don't know because we've never seen him in a large non-comedy role. I hope he surprises everyone, the way Whoopi Goldberg did in The Color Purple. I think the bigger problem might be that he's taking over the role from Morgan Freakin' Freeman. He'll have to really make it his own, or he'll come across as a pale copy.

What bluedana said. I've enjoyed some of the Madea films, but they're about as far removed from a Patterson novel as you can get. If someone could recommend a film where Perry has a lead (or sizeable supporting) dramatic role, I'd love to see it just so I can get an inkling of his non-comedic abilities.
