The first episode isn't great (actually it often gets voted worst episode in polls). Watch more. Season two is great, from season 3 it changes from being a sitcom set on a spaceship to a parody of sf.I never watched much of Red Dwarf, couldn't get past the first episode the few times I've tried (nothing against Red Dwarf as a show, its just not my kind of comedy), but I kind of thought it was just a general audience comedy show, not a Torchwood audience type of show. I guess that would make things nearly impossible when it comes to a crossover, even without the other issues.
Wow, Red dwarf has basically always aired with timing perfect to not have a crossover. I don't know much about the show outside of it being one of the only non-Doctor Who British sci fi shows that I've heard of (the others being Blakes 7 and Space: 1999), so its interesting to learn a bit about it in this context.
