Spoilers Two big characters return for anniversary.

Can't speak for others, but to me he looks a bit like Kryten from "Red Dwarf".

As someone who knows nothing about British TV rights (like what channel shows are on, who owns what, etc) or Red Dwarf, I'm still surprised that Doctor Who has crossed over with the soap opera EastEnders but (as far as I know) done nothing official with Red dwarf.

Just the general look makes me think that Tennant really is playing a new Doctor with an old face instead of just being 10 again. I could be completely wrong but thats just the feeling I'm getting from these pics.

They were made in different physical studios, though did rehearse in the same buildings, and only crossed over paths for a year. Modern Red Dwarf is no longer directly a BBC concern.
The Red Dwarf universe/multiverse is also explicitly not the Doctor Who one, or even close. (No aliens)
Also… two target audiences that prior to torchwood would never have been allowed to mix tbh.

Unofficially? I think the Tardis is in a couple of FX shots, tucked away in the docking bay.

Assuming this is (temporarily) 14, and not 10, I wonder if the Doctor's personality will be a bit different than what Tennant's portrayed before. Similar but maybe a bit more jaded or cantankerous since he looks older than before?

Only one unofficial crossover....

I suspect that's probably a victim of timing. IIRC, Red Dwarf began in 1988 or 89, right around when Classic Who was winding down. The majority of Red Dwarf aired through the 90s, when Doctor Who was inactive. When Doctor Who returned in 2005, what Red Dwarf we got has been sporadic and usually treated as "event television" meaning the significance is seeing the old gang back together again, not leaving much time for a Doctor Who crossover. And even Doctor Who has had its hands full the years that Red Dwarf has had seasons. Back to Earth aired in 2009, which was Tennant's "gap year." Season 10 was in 2012, when Doctor Who only had five regular episodes, plus the Christmas special. Season 11 was in 2016, when Doctor Who only had the one episode at Christmas. Season 12 in 2017, which DW was focused on ending Capaldi's run. And finally The Promised Land was in 2020, where Doctor Who did a full season, but well, there were other things going on in the world that year...

I never watched much of Red Dwarf, couldn't get past the first episode the few times I've tried (nothing against Red Dwarf as a show, its just not my kind of comedy), but I kind of thought it was just a general audience comedy show, not a Torchwood audience type of show. I guess that would make things nearly impossible when it comes to a crossover, even without the other issues.

Wow, Red dwarf has basically always aired with timing perfect to not have a crossover. I don't know much about the show outside of it being one of the only non-Doctor Who British sci fi shows that I've heard of (the others being Blakes 7 and Space: 1999), so its interesting to learn a bit about it in this context.

Red Dwarf changes tone quite a bit in series 3, so if you're struggling with the first ep that might be a better jumping on point. You might want to watch the S2 ep Kryten so you know the backstory for a particular character. Or just slow down the high-speed "Star Wars Crawl" recap they do at the start of S3.

Its been a few years since I tried to watch Red Dwarf. I didn't think it was a bad show, just not for me. If I ever try again, I'll do that.

Seasons 3-5 (maybe 6) are definitely the highlight of Red Dwarf and pretty different from the first two seasons. The characters leave the ship more and start getting into more dangerous sci-fi plots. If you don't enjoy any of them it's safe to stop watching as it's not going to get better.

Why settle for just Matt Smith? I want Amy and Rory back as well, even though it's impossible, and I want there to be a really satisfying reason for their brief return that makes me nod and say 'that was clever and also satisfying'.

If it has been Coronation Street instead we could come up with some way to connect them with Craig Charles in there and all.

C'mon, he's not THAT old...

I discovered Red Dwarf late on my black and white TV when I was about 12 with ‘The Last Day’ and the earlier series aren’t as good for me either (good ideas, but not as well executed and tonally very different) III to VI, and even VII worked best for me, and everything since they came back. Hattie is the superior Holly, and frankly is how it always should have been.

If someone who was an SF fan wanted to get into it, I would definitely say do series 3 onwards, and maybe read the first couple of books (which are tonally different again, but give you a more detailed origin story than the screen versions of series one and two — to the point where the books are referenced in the TV show.) or to be honest, just the first so as to avoid cliff hangers and which of the two official third books counts. (It’s a long story)

Then maybe watch the first couple of episodes to decide if you can put up with the tone.

If there was to be any announcement today, we'd probably have had it by now, I feel.

They had to announce T&T because they were shooting in public, so we may hear something else next week before the next big public shoot.

They're shooting in a power station a couple of days this week but no one's going to see anything from that.

Bad Wolf (I typed "the BBC" first out of habit) have already started setting-up for the week long night shoot in Cardiff that begins next Friday. It'll be resident's only access and it looks like they'll be concentrated at the end of the street furthest from the main road so sadly less chance of any exciting photos coming out of it.
