TV dating shows........

Specifically the Bachelor / Bachelorette. Why?

Dating shows on TV. They make me squirm, and cringe.

Currently on TV in the other room is The Bachelorette.

It makes me cringe every time I walk into the lounge room and see that show.

The way they advertised this series they made it sound like this rather average looking woman was the only woman who didn't have a partner / wanted one, and boo hoo, and all that..

Why is she more deserving then any of the other millions of women who can't get a TV show made around them so they can find a partner? Why?

The girl they chose this series is very plain looking too, and same for the dude they had in The Bachelor which ended her a few weeks before this started, they have decided to run both shows back to back.

Both of them looked very ordinary. They both seem like boring people too.

They're being made as long as people keep tuning in. Without viewers they'd disappear.
I'm mostly amazed at how far some people are willing to go for their 15 minutes of fame.

I don't know if these modern shows are completely or partially scripted, mainly because I have never watched a single one.

Old time shows like the Dating Game & the Match Game were, at least, some cheesy fun.

Unfortunately, the public is stuck on "reality" programs.

Well in the 80s we had a show on TV called "Perfect Match" which was a show where people were like a sort of match making quiz show, and it was utterly cheezy but we got that, and it was fun.. It was meant in good spirits. This stuff I don't know it just feels very forced and has a level of ick factor..

I feel pretty sure some things on these shows are semi scripted as they tend to advertise when certain things happen so there has to be some kind of scripting or manipulation going on..

Reality TV is popular for several reasons, and they are all built around the concept of non-sexual voyeurism. In some cases people watch it pining over a life they don't have. In other cases people watch it to point and laugh at people they consider inferior or desperate. Sometimes it's for a glimpse into a world they do not, and perhaps would not, inhabit. But it always comes back to the voyeurism element. It's like tailored people watching for lazy viewers.

Well if you prefer you could have a dating show that we have in the UK called "Naked Attraction". And yes the contestant do appear fully naked.

But in general terms, attraction is subjective. Just because someone finds plain looking doesn't mean everyone else will.

Yes for sure, that is true. What I find plain and ordinary looking others might wet their jocks over..... Very true.

Wasn't there a UK show also called Naked Dating?

Orphan Black is far beyond good. It's grrrreat!

Fans of the lowest common denominator type TV wouldn't have the attention span for it.

Match Game was a game show hosted by Gene Rayburn where contestants tried to match their answers with a celebrity panel. It was recently revived as a short run prime time show with Alec Baldwin hosting.

The Dating Game was hosted by Jim Lange where a contestant would ask three unseen to them opposite sex contestants and would pick one based on their answers.

Richard Dawson hosted Family Feud.
