TUC: Collectors Edition Question

Yeah, right. They cut his name so as to not distract but show his picture... Sure!

People are more likely to remember that he was that guy sitting around than he was a Romulan Ambassador, or that he was called Nanclus.
His name was never mentioned in that scene in the first place...
His name was indeed mentioned in that scene, I suggest you watch it again.

I did.
I heard '... and others.'

 The scene with him and the President, obviously, not that one. This was actually covered way earlier in the thread, too.

And Holly Wookiee, this is different from 'Khan with falsies.' Why? Moving goalposts! Early on it was insisted by Oso Blanco that Nanclus was never named in any version of that scene. Now that we have shown the audio indicating, in fact, his name was spoken, the argument is now that the lip-synch is different. ;)

They didn't say "the Human Admiral Cartwright" or "the Klingon General Chang", so why should they say "the Romulan Ambassador Nanclus"?

I think the producers used "the Romulan Ambassador" INSTEAD of "Ambassador Nanclus", because they realised that the audience wouldn't recognise him by his name.

Or for continuity in the movie. Kirk & co. met Cartwright at the big meeting, so they know him. They met Chang at dinner, so they know him. They met Nanclus...wait, they never did meet Nanclus! Maybe, his title was included to indicate he was with another faction, which the crew may not have known about!

You know, even if there was any question about what was said, the section in question is 2 syllables long. "And others" is 3. That in and of itself is indicative that your line isn't in there.

No, he was never named in the interrogation scene.

Well, as you said much earlier:

I can be wrong, but didn't the President of the UFP address him by name in the office-scene?

And here was one of the replies:

I'm pretty sure he says "And what is the position of the Romulan government, Ambassador Nanclus?" during the scene with the Klingon Ambassador in the president's office.
Ahem. Why repeat the cyclical arguments, when you can simply quote them? ;)

Yeah, we've been going in circles on this one for a while now. And frankly, I'm getting bored, tired, and dizzy. Since neither side seems likely to give ground, howzabout we agree to disagree?

And none of these facts are in dispute, Mr. Pres... err... sorry ;)

I actually did forget that I posted in this thread before yesterday...

But the fact still stands: The office scene is the only on in which the Romulan Ambassador is named.

It is '... and other.'
And, THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!!

Come now, even you concede that the DVD release that has been posted the words 'Romulan... Ambassador... Nanclus' are spoken, even if you persist in believing they were dubbed over '..and others'? ;) Nanclus's name was indeed mentioned twice in that version of the film.

I heard it, many of us heard it, we can still hear it - and when we got to read the script and the novelization, it was there too! I'm sorry Valeris didn't enunciate well enough for some of you, but she was being mind raped at the time...

No, I don't think the name 'Nanclus' was dubbed over. It was never once spoken in the mind-meld/rape/interrogation-scene.

Those same script-excerpts that still list the characters name as 'Saavik'?

And you know very well that movie-novelizations are based on early script-versions.
But following that argument to its end, Kirk did make the orbital-sky-dive in Generations, and we did see Sulu commanding the Excelsior and McCoy and Spock lamenting Kirk's death and...

The idea of bad lip synching didn't come from me.

I still insist on the fact that Nanclus was never named during the mind meld scene. The audio is in PERFECT sync with the visuals. Both say "and others".

Actually, the section in question is THREE syllables long.

Yes, apologies for appearing to imply that it did. I note that ST-One, the originator of the theory, still agrees with you on this point. It perplexes me that to prove the lip-synching he provided a link to a clip from the version where she clearly does say 'Romulan Ambassador Nanclus', however. ;)

I never even implied anything about bad lip-synch.
I only said that her lip-movements do not even suggest that she could say 'Nanclus'.

And the clip I linked to has her clearly say '... and others.'
