Saw part of this on cable some years back. Thought it looked kind of interesting but I didn't bother to identify it and for some odd reason it's stuck with me so now I want to find it.
The movie was a black and white horror film, circa early 1960's (I'd guess). Foreign language--I don't recall what language but I DO remember subtitles. It concerned a rather wormy looking man who frequently terrorized the patrons of a pub with his outrageous demanding personality and generally obnoxious behavior. It was rumored that he had supernatural abilities, yet the only display I can recall him demonstrating was some hypnotic or mesmerizing skills. Even so, the pub goers were routinely terrified of him and when he came through, he got to do pretty much what he wanted.
Bits and pieces, I can recall; There was a legend, rumor, tale among the towns-people that on a certain night the dead would rise to exact vengeance upon those foolish enough to be outside or in the cemetery when the certain time came. I remember there being a "witch" or some woman who the main bad-guy was intimidated by or afraid of. This guy also did not believe the tale about the dead rising and antagonized the pub-goers and townies with his skepticism. At some point, IIRC one of the pub-goers works up the nerve to challenge this guy and loses. Somewhere along the way, the main bad guy uses his hypnotic abilities to force himself on a woman ( I think she might have been the wife, daughter, girlfriend of the pub-goer who challenged him). He rapes her and she shortly thereafter responds by committing suicide via hanging. I believe that people who cared about her hide the body later and the main bad guy is convinced that she has risen from the grave when he finds her coffin empty and she is pursuing him though a forest/the cemetery. He flees to the witches house but can find no sanctuary there and is discovered the next morning frightened to death, thereby confirming the legend of the dead rising to exact their vengeance.
Anyone with any ideas, it'd be appreciated. Every once in a while some old movie I've seen a long time ago or only seen part of comes back to vex me like this. Given my spotting recollection of it, I think I may have been switching back and forth between this and something else, watching both films, while planning on eventually seeing this one in it's entirety some later time.
Thanks to anyone who can ID it for me. I know it's not much to go on.
