Trying out Match.com

The Gainer man is looking for love! No seriously, I've just gotten off the phone with this girl. She's got everything. She's cute and geeky. The subscription was a bit on the expensive side but I've heard good things. A guy I know got his girlfriend from this site.

We are going to meet up at this restaurant on Saturday. I understand some girls would be hesitant to be picked from a guy they just met on the internet.

It seems like more people are warming up to online dating.

Anybody tried this service or something similar?

No offense, but match-making pay-sites are for suckers... ;)

I swear by OkCupid.com... not only is it TOTALLY FREE, but also; I've met more people via that site than *any* other website... and I've used *many* over the years. Hades, I've even found Craigslist and MySpace to be better at connecting me with new people than any site that I've paid for in the past.

The best things in life truly are free. :D

^I've heard OKCupid is totally a hookup site. ;)

Mike, good luck! Meeting someone over the internet is completely legitimate, if you are careful (and it sounds like you have been). I hope she's great in person, too!

I know a few people who have used Match or eHarmony, and don't be surprised if it takes you a few dates with a few different people to really find someone that meshes with your style. But I think everyone who's really intent upon getting into a relationship, and looking and acting on it intelligently (as you seem to be), will find someone, or at least have some fun. :p

What a coincidence. I just put up a profile the other day too. The free one, I'm not going to pay yet. One wink so far....haven't taken it any further yet. I'm considering it.

Over the years I met many ladies on Match.com and Yahoo. I had a relationship of over a year with a woman whom I met on Yahoo, and in 2007 I met the woman whom I will marry in April. Several friends and co-workers have also met their significant others online.

Good luck! Don't expect immediate results. Those sites have their ebbs and flows.

I'm on one too (not Match), and the guys I've actually met in person have been great. Not weirdos. Of course, they go through a heavy filtration process of conversing and phone calls first, but so far so good. :)

Does she share your taste for cheesy movies? :p

I met a few girls through Match.com, and dated a few of them for a little while. Eventually, met my fiance that way as well (don't recall if it was Match or Yahoo I met her on at the time).

If done right, you can leave enough info in that you don't have to pay for the service, as well. If I had to pay for it, I probably wouldn't have gone for it. Leaving AIM info worked pretty well, though. As long as you're open to chatting with a bunch of people, and not pinning all of your hopes on one profile at a time, it's a decent service, and lets you meet people you wouldn't normally run into. The stigma attached to it at first has mostly gone away as well, which makes it more ok to go for.

My reaction is one of :cardie: to those who claim to have met someone on one of these services. Then again, maybe I'm too old, but I have accounts set up (free, of course) so I can "explore my options". Perhaps it's the offerings in my area (Oklahoma) but (almost) every woman over the age of 28 seems to have two to five children. They all seem to be needy freaks and "love to laugh"

Perhaps it's an age thing, but for the younger crowd (post college, mostly, say 22-26 or so) this is a fairly useful service, as you're done with college, and presumably working (or at home), and your dating pool has dropped off considerably, along with your constant opportunities to meet people. This is an added connection to compensate for that.

suppose the younger crowd is more familiar and accepting with using online resources like this as well, which helps. I also screened out anyone with kids or without pictures. I was just looking for someone similar to me, who had since broken up with the college ex, and was looking to start over. Wasn't looking to be a substitute father, or to "rescue" some girl from failed relationships or background. Just using it as another way to meet people other than at a bar...

I've never understood "meeting people" at a bar.
