Tricorder Invented?

I saw this on Yahoo and thought it may be interesting. I didn't see it elsewhere so I apologize if it's already being discussed.

I love how crap gets labeled as being some "real" piece of Star Trek technology when it maybe just vaguely resembles it at best. Kind of like how cell phones are compared to communicators all the time just because most of them flip open and are roughly the same size.

Well, the concept is good, and somebody is taking action. If it was inspired by Trek directly or indirectly, score another one for the value of science fiction. If not but comparing it to Trek tech lights a little fire that helps get it out there benefiting people, it's still another contribution to society made by science fiction.

This sort of thing crops up every year or two. Any small handheld electronic "scanner" type device is labeled a "tricorder." I have seen this at least a half a dozen times. Some of them are kind of interesting devices, but they are hardly tricorders.
