Trek's catsuit problem with female actresses

CSame with Kira to a lesser degree.

I'm not disputing the notion that Kira's uniform could be construed as a catsuit...but I'm suspecting that Nana might, just might, conceivably have preferred it to the stock Bajoran uniform she was given in "Emissary" - a uniform with shoulder pads that could put somebody's eye out.

that's a very interesting POV.

But invites a question, at what point Star Trek changes so much it isn't Star Trek anymore?

The Star Trek of Theseus
I don't know. At what point does music change so much that it's not music anymore?

It's the same thing.

I'll listen to different types of music and watch movies from different types of eras too. For films, I'm on a big 1920s-1940s kick right now. I have little use for movies made these days, I look to TV instead for new material. Which is why I was glad Trek went to Streaming TV: it's the perfect fit. For music, sometimes I like new music, sometimes I'll listen to music from the '40s (I like swing), sometimes anything in-between, sometimes classical.

I don't box myself in. If I did that, it would be nothing except whatever I grew up with (in this case: the '80s and '90s) all the time. And I would judge everything against that all the time. It would get pretty boring after a while.

Driving it back to Star Trek: I have no idea what I'll think of Star Trek in the 2040s. Maybe it'll be too far away from my sensibilities, maybe it won't be. I turned away from Star Trek once before, but that had more to do with thinking Rick Berman had overstayed his welcome. I wanted someone else to take over and I welcomed a different type of Star Trek. Abrams Trek wasn't it. See what I just said about movies. But Kurtzman Trek fit what I was looking for and the rest is history.

Anyway, last thing about "What is Star Trek?" Then I'll get off this. Hey, he asked.

Here's a direct quote of mine from what I said about DSC Season 4. I'll cut straight to the point.
I think the season still holds up. I also am of the opinion that the fourth season is the best season of the series. I like it better than the first season, which had been my favorite before. Some people think they dragged out contact with Species 10-C, but I disagree. I think it couldn't be as easy as 1-2-3 and happen as fast as "wham, bam, thank you ma'am." Communicating with a species with whom the Universal Translator won't work, it will take time, and we got to see that here.

When the Discovery crew finally began to truly communicate with Species 10-C, it reminded me of when Kirk was able to communicate with The Companion in "Metamorphosis" (TOS). For you non-TOS Fans who don't know what I'm talking about, look it up. It was also the opposite of "The Changeling" and Star Trek: The Motion Picture where Nomad and V'Ger wanted to exterminate "imperfect" or "not true" life forms. Species 10-C didn't realize the inhabitants of the Milky Way were sentient and stopped using the DMA once that was communicated to it. This is pure Star Trek. It doesn't get any more Star Trek than that.

If you want to tell me how what I just described above isn't Star Trek, go for it.

I'd argue it's more like fashion jumpsuit that is tapered. It incorporates almost no stretch fabric, but is just well tailored to fit close to the body. The pants in the original uniform were far tighter, far more revealing of form. I suspect that Kira would have disappeared in a catsuit given Nana Visitor's narrow frame.

When I think back to when I watched Trek in my early 20's (presumably the target demo for the costuming choices), I don't recall ever being overly titillated by any of the catsuit-clad women. What I do recall is being thrown by how good Troi looked after Jellico ordered her out of the catsuit; I had a similar reaction to VOY's Relativity when Seven was in uniform.

Ironically, it allowed their natural beauty - and they are both very attractive women - to shine through more than those idiotic catsuits ever did.

^ Those catsuits never appealed to me, either, and I was in the middle of the supposed male target demographic (age) back then. Those catsuits were advertising their body shapes way too aggressively, for my taste.
Same and I was smack in teens and early college years when they aired. I loathed the costuming choices.

I’m not gonna lie…

I was in my mid-late teens/early 20’s when these shows were on and I absolutely found the women attractive in those suits. And I still do watching re-runs today. I don’t think there is any shame in admitting that.

That said, attractive women in tight fitting costumes wasn’t THE reason I watched. I watched and continue to watch because I like Star Trek. The characters, ships, stories, etc…

There are as many Star Trek shows after ENT as before it.

In the beginning, there was Star Trek and it was good.

Then they took out Kirk and Spock (TNG)
Then they took out the Enterprise (DS9)
Then they took out the Captain's dick (VOY)
Then they put the Enterprise and the Captain's dick back on again, but they took out Spock's dick (ENT)
Then they took out the Enterprise, the Captain's dick, painted him black, demoted him to a mutineer and made Spock sing Major General in a turbolifit with Number One (STD)(jumped the shark, nuked the frige point)

I dont know what came after

Unfortunately it was the reason for several of my Trek friends. So it left a very poor taste in my mouth. I'm sure if I had enjoyed the characters, ships and stories of the shows I would have tolerated the costuming choices.

There's no shame in admitting you found them attractive in those costumes. The shame belongs to the producers for sexually objectifying their employees.

Absolutely the same with me :techman:

They did look great and attractive, and when they went to the regular uniform, they looked more outstanding.

For Seven and TPol, there was no reason for the catsuit ( in universe reason) but for Troi, if you look at Lower Decks, the counselor, he wears a regular suit, not a uniform. So growing up, I thought it was okay for her to wear something different other than the uniform because of her job. Now if she was on the bridge, definitely uniform, but in her office setting, something more relaxed. Maybe not a skintight skirt, but something to relax the patient.
