Trekkie vs. Trekker

I know this thread has probably already been done before, but I'm new to this site (and am loving it by the way), so I wanted to get everyone's opinion.

I myself consider myself a Trekkie. But you adopted brother, who is only ten years old, considers himself a Trekker.

What do you refer to yourself as, and why?

I'm a Trekkie. I've been a fan of Star Trek since the 70's. It wasn't until I'd been a fan for some time when the whole trekkie or trekker thing started. I never saw the point in changing to a trekker.

Honestly, I prefer Trekker, but I think it's more of a paranoid, defensive position, to be honest. I'm trying to be more comfortable with Trekkie.

Usually, instead of labeling myself as some sort of sci-fi fan, I simply refer to those who can't handle sci-fi as "mundanes."

"Trekkie" is the commonly-used term--usually by non-fans.

I mention Star Trek, and it's always either, "Oh, you're a Trekkie?"

--or worse, "Oh, the movies with Darth Vader?"

Anyhow, I guess "Trekker" was coined by The Brethren as a more "comfortable" term--one that doesn't sound as derogatory.

Maybe so, but it's sad if it is the rule. Guys don't do that to me based on the fact that I like Star Trek or any of my varying 'nerdy' interests. My gender is so often ridiculously shallow. It's very sad.

I wish there was an easy way for women to try dating from a guy's point of view. You wouldn't believe the hell you put us thru with this "double standard" shit.

If a woman judges a guy by his paycheck, she's evaluating his qualifications as a husband and provider. If a guy judges a woman by her paycheck, he's a cheap moocher who only wants her for her money.

If a woman judges a guy by his looks, she's evaluating his genetic makeup to determine what potential children will be like. If a guy judges a woman by her looks, he's selfish and shallow and only interested in her body.

If a guy talks dirty to a girl, that's sexual harassment.
If a girl talks dirty to a guy, that's $3.99 a minute.

I have never understood the whole Trekkie versus Trekker thing. It was never an issue until I came to this board. Why do Trekkies feel the need to degrade Trekkers? "Why can't we all just get along?"- Rodney King or conversely "Stop hitting me with that brick?!"- Reginald Denney (look it up).
