Trekkie vs. Trekker

I know this thread has probably already been done before, but I'm new to this site (and am loving it by the way), so I wanted to get everyone's opinion.

I myself consider myself a Trekkie. But you adopted brother, who is only ten years old, considers himself a Trekker.

What do you refer to yourself as, and why?

"Trekkers" are simply Trekkies who are afraid to admit it. They're in denial....

;)

I'm a Trekkie.

:techman:

Trekkie. Either that or "Babylon 5 fan who likes Star Trek as well", but definitely not Trekker. Always go for the more widely understood one.

I'm a Trekkie. I've been a fan of Star Trek since the 70's. It wasn't until I'd been a fan for some time when the whole trekkie or trekker thing started. I never saw the point in changing to a trekker.

Honestly, I prefer Trekker, but I think it's more of a paranoid, defensive position, to be honest. I'm trying to be more comfortable with Trekkie.

Usually, instead of labeling myself as some sort of sci-fi fan, I simply refer to those who can't handle sci-fi as "mundanes."

The whole Trekkie vs. Trekker distinction seems to be a bit silly, to be honest.

I just call myself a Trekkie and don't worry about it.

JJ and a huge fan both have differing opinions on the terms in the Star Trek XI extras. This debate will probably never end. I don't really go by either, honestly.

Doesn't matter. Either way, soon as you say "Star Trek", the look on a woman's face is such that she looks like she would have felt better if you said "serial rapist murderer".

"Trekkie" is the commonly-used term--usually by non-fans.

I mention Star Trek, and it's always either, "Oh, you're a Trekkie?"

--or worse, "Oh, the movies with Darth Vader?"

Anyhow, I guess "Trekker" was coined by The Brethren as a more "comfortable" term--one that doesn't sound as derogatory.

In effect:

Trekkies are obsessed. Trekkers are passionate.

I've always heard Trekkie, never heard of this "Trekker" term, before. So I assume Trekkie is correct. It doesn't really matter, anyway, though. It's like asking a Twilight fan if they are a Twilighter or a Twi-hard or a Fanpire or whatever those weirdos are calling themselves.

Not true. I would be absolutely delighted if a guy admitted to liking Star Trek :) He would get a date from me instantly.

Well believe me, statistically speaking from personal experience, you're the exception not the rule.

Maybe so, but it's sad if it is the rule. Guys don't do that to me based on the fact that I like Star Trek or any of my varying 'nerdy' interests. My gender is so often ridiculously shallow. It's very sad.

Not aimed at you directly, Alexander, but

I wish there was an easy way for women to try dating from a guy's point of view. You wouldn't believe the hell you put us thru with this "double standard" shit.

If a woman judges a guy by his paycheck, she's evaluating his qualifications as a husband and provider. If a guy judges a woman by her paycheck, he's a cheap moocher who only wants her for her money.

If a woman judges a guy by his looks, she's evaluating his genetic makeup to determine what potential children will be like. If a guy judges a woman by her looks, he's selfish and shallow and only interested in her body.

If a guy talks dirty to a girl, that's sexual harassment.
If a girl talks dirty to a guy, that's $3.99 a minute.

Dennis Miller:
We should put all our time, money and know-how into genetically engineering a third sex that everyone can just fuck indiscriminately without feeling the need to phone the next morning. And while this solution may sound silly, it's no sillier than what we're doing now - a tentative sexual two-step in which neither partner wants to lead, neither partner wants to follow, and everybody's feet are getting stepped on.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I have never understood the whole Trekkie versus Trekker thing. It was never an issue until I came to this board. Why do Trekkies feel the need to degrade Trekkers? "Why can't we all just get along?"- Rodney King or conversely "Stop hitting me with that brick?!"- Reginald Denney (look it up).:vulcan:
