Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

Merchandise has struggled for many franchises that aren't Marvel or Star Wars related.

and TNG barely made a penny on it's blu-ray release?

So if the fans of the new movies didn't rush out to buy insanely overpriced sets of a 25 year-old TV series, they are somehow failures? Never mind the fact that CBS choose to release Enterprise at the same time, forcing many fans to make a choice on what to buy.

It isn't the fault of the Abrams films that even fans of TNG have seemingly lost all interest in the series.

I bought TNG on DVD back when those first came out, and loved them. But they're now all on Netflix/Hulu/etc which is more convenient. Then the blu rays came out which are clearly better, but at what cost? I can't justify buying them AGAIN. I know how the stories go. It's just a better quality print. I won't choose to put my entertainment dollar towards that instead of buying actual new shows I don't know the plots to. Like for example, a new Start Trek series starting in 2017

Really excited about this! Really made my day.
Wouldn't mind an Abramsverse "TNG", set 50-100 years after the new movies, maybe even re-imagining a couple TNG characters (nuWorf anyone?), but mostly new ones.

Would be cool if they worked some kind of deal to use the sets from the movies, that would be some high quality stuff for a TV show

edit: Wulfio is probably right about the rights to Abramsverse. If they go Prime, maybe just continue on from Voyager.

That's exactly how I feel. It's kind of like how TOS fans felt when they announced TNG I guess, you're a bit worried how they'll handle your show but optimistic. I love most ST, so odds are it will be right up my street. I've always felt that the franchise lost it's way, I'm glad the films have brought new people to it even though they're not quite what I'd call Star Trek.

The people making this show also make Person of Interest and Fringe. I think they know how to do serial stuff well, and character. And have subtext. All the things the films were missing. But those films fulfill their function, this show will have a different function. It's all good

There are people called "lawyers" who get paid "legal fees" to settle "copyright issues" and resolve "proprietary conflicts" and I imagine the both CBS and Paramount has a few on their payroll.

CBS and Paramout are two different companies since the split post-Enterprise. One has the movie rights and another the TV rights. In theory the JJ-version is proprietary, developed and owned by Paramount. CBS has no claim to it.

Look at your Abrams DVD's/Blu-Ray's. Even they say that "Star Trek and All Related Marks are Trademarks of CBS Corp."

CBS owns the rights to the Star Trek IP and all related characters. Paramount licenses the name and characters to make movies. Both companies are subsidiaries of Sumner Redstone's National Amusements.

I'm quite positive if that's what everyone wanted to happen it would happen in a heartbeat. I think it's unlikely though

But anyway, the part of his proposal that I found really interesting at the time was this bit:

Imagine recruiting people like Alistair Reynolds, Ursula K LeGuin, George R R Martin, Richard K Morgan, James S A Corey, Ann Leckie, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, etc, etc, etc, etc - and adapting their short-stories to fit in with Star Trek - changing villains to Romulans, etc.

If it airs in January 2017 we'll be seeing a lot about it soon. Working backwards they'll need to do post production, which would quite a thing. before November is over. Which means filming has to be done by end of September. Which means casting should be going on now

I thinks he's wrong about that. Most were original stories written for Star Trek and not adaptations. Many of these writers, who weren't used to writing for TV ( and some who were) had their work significantly rewritten to fit the format and the series. I'd rather get people who understand the show and medium.

B5's dialog is horribly written. JMS needed someone to rewrite his stuff. Decent idea man, though.

I'm thinking clean reboot featuring Kirk & Spock (with an outside chance of a TNG reboot). As I can imagine the powers-that-be would be a bit wary of the "new ship, new crew", as that didn't work so well the last few times, better to stick with a winning formula.

And why screw around with limiting yourself to any previous continuity? Makes the most sense to start with a clean slate.

I think this would be a great way to have stories that actually were on the cutting edge of sci-fi, and ensure Star Trek's fine tradition of stand-alone episodic storytelling remained the best in the industry - I think only Stargate SG1 ever gave Trek a run for it's money in that regard.

I'm out of the loop really. Does anyone know how much shows are made on American TV now? Would there be a showrunner who does the bulk of the writing? Or is it still like TNG where you have a producer who steers the writers, but you get a new writer each week?
