Can't find it now, but I read a rumour that the new show might be centred around a group of cadets in Starfleet Academy. The more I think about it, the more I'm warming to the idea. It'd be a great way to introduce new viewers to this universe, as for once we'd not be following the exploits of super-competent officers with years of experience under their belts, but watch as a bunch of greenhorns take their first steps into the big unknown. Given the serial nature of contemporary television, it'd be absolutely amazing if after a few seasons we'd see them graduate and actually get assigned to a starship. The potential for character growth and gradual opening up of the vast Trek universe could be immense.
The only downside is that I read this Academy concept is to be centred around the TOS characters, which I hope does not turn out to be true. I'm really not interested in yet another version of Kirk, Spock and Bones. If they're going for the Academy angle, I hope it'll be set way after the TNG era.
