News Trans character announced

Honestly I would have rather have them put those trans and non-binary characters(or at least one of them) into SNW. As others have pointed out Discovery already has so many characters and Michael takes centre stage so often that hose new characters might just be glorified extras.
And well Pike does need a crew for SNW...

Well, we don't yet know who the characters in SNW will be. I think you can assume there will be gay characters, and possibly trans characters and so forth, regardless of whether they've already included one in STD.

For that matter, we know nothing about Number One other than that she's stoic and uses a lot of hair product.

You helped remind me why I don’t like posting here. But I always break down and do it. Then I regret it.

Well, sometimes we mortals dare oppose you.

Seriously, your observation was an old, trite, meaningless one that didn't deserve better. I'll admit that I spent more verbiage on it than was probably worthwhile.

I admit I had the same thought when they announced... whatshisname... the ex soldier Burnham meets. I would certainly like to know more about the bridge crew, also see more of that older mechanic ... God, I'm bad with names. And Saru needs more development.

So Aria is the one standing between Stamets and Culber.

That is so weird to me that Star Trek has never had a non-binary character before. Or transgender for that matter... Both of which seem like something they would have easily thought of even back in the sixties. Although, I guess we didn't get the first black lead until 1993, and the first black female lead until 2017, so... So everything in it's time, I suppose.
Its interesting that Aria is between Stamets and Culber in the picture. That trekmoivie.com article said they had an interesting relationship with Paul and Hugh. The placement might not be accidental.

This is great news, I've only heard about the non-binary crew member before, so the announcement of another new LGBTQ+ character was a pleasant surprise. Based on Stamets and Culber, I'm confident they will be portrayed with the utmost respect and as matter-of-factly as our engineer and doctor were. As a straight white male, I continue not to give a flying fuck about my demographic being represented on the show. I can perfectly identify with Burnham's issues and family dynamics and aspire to be as in touch with my emotional side as Tilly, and that's perfectly enough for me. I never needed male characters to find someone to relate to.

As much as some people don't like it, LGBTQ+ representation in Star Trek is a big thing, considering how it had always avoided dealing with the matter until Discovery, apart from one single allegorical episode that didn't feature any actual LGBTQ+ characters, let alone performers (The Outcast), one major, hyper-offensive stinker that reduced the whole concept to a joke (Profit and Lace), the occasional use of the cringeworthy "Girl-on-Girl is Hot" gimmick instead of portraying actual lesbian relationships, and of course Blood and Fire infamously being shelved back in '87 because the execs wouldn't touch the very topic with a ten-lightyear pole. So of course including LGBTQ+ characters in Star Trek is newsworthy.

And you deserve no more of my time.

The only problem is the low number of episodes per season, which doesn't give all characters enough time.
So true. I have no objections to these particular characters and I am all for IDIC, but there are already so many characters established. I hate to have less time with Tilly, Saru, Stamets, Culber and Reno... Also if Gray is to become host to Dax, then I want to spend time with that character. Plus it would be nice if the bridge crew got some time....

EDIT: And I forgot Nhan! I love Nhan! Point is, lotta characters!

If the characters fit the story, cool. If not, no problem ignoring them. I don't need to know the bridge crew. Haven't needed to since I watched TOS or TNG and nameless extras take stations then die.

I just hope they have time to develop these new characters. Expectations will be high now.

I love DSC, but they've really struggled with character overload syndrome. They intro characters, and don't have enough time or material to use them meaningfully. Or, they retain older characters, and we have the same problem.
I don't know, I think it's this way because that's the way show is structured.

As I see as others have pointed out, Discovery is basically the Micheal Burnham show (it's not really Star Trek: Discovery in that it's really more Star Trek: Micheal Burnham), while virtually every other Star Trek series was more of an ensemble piece. I guess you can put Picard in that same category too, although that's more aptly titled in being called, point blank, Star Trek: Picard. It's his show, it's about him, and everyone else is secondary.

Star Trek: Discovery - The Micheal Burnham Chronicles is all Mikey Spock all the time (of course, I love Mikey Spock so I'm totally cool with this). Anyway, I think only the characters that are in close proximity to her will get the most character development. It doesn't look like Adira and Gray fall into that category so I don't believe they'll be developed all that much. Or at least I'll be shocked if they are, I think they'll be quaternary, or tertiary at best. They'll probably get their splash in the third or fourth episode, and then will get a handful of other moments throughout the rest of the season and that would be about it... that would be my guess.

Book, Cleveland Booker... his character is in close proximity to Micheal Burnham, so we'll more than likely learn a fair amount about him.

Of course, I could be totally wrong about this. It'll be one way or the other.

I imagine the story was built around the relationship. So, no, it wasn’t shoehorned in.
But always kinda weird that Dax couldn't have dinner or speak to the former misses without side eye, yet Ezri basically moved into Jadzia's old life... I guess maybe it was on because she was SURPRISE joined ?
