Ian Alexander is Gray, Trek's first trans character. And Blu del Barrio is Aria, the nonbinary character glimpsed in the trailer and leaked promo art.

    Discuss.

I hope their characters have more to them than being the one dimensional token character because I can't be bothered saying they're shitty characters and it devolving into whether that is transphobic.

I think Gray was also in the trailer?

"Ian Alexander (“The OA”) will play Gray, a trans man who has spent his life as a Trill planning to be a host for a symbiotic alien species that lives in different hosts over its lifetime."

There was someone seen floating in the symbiote pool in the Season 3 trailer.

Ian Alexander was fantastic in both The OA and The Last of Us 2. This is a great piece of casting news.

I hope not. Give us a new symbiote.

Bringing back Dax would be kind of neat, just because that would likely have even twice or triple the amount of lifetimes Ezri had. Of course, that's assuming they can actually live that long. I don't think it's ever been established how long trill symbionts live.

I'm the same way. I hope they are written well. I'm just afraid if they aren't written well and I criticize that based on that standard, I will be called transphopic or something. This series needs to write it's characters better so we'll see what happens.

Memory-Alpha says they can 'easily live beyond 550 years'. No episode source given after that line.

One of my best friends is trans and that gives me immunity to say whatever I want without being labelled transphobic.

    That's how it works, right?:p

Only a paid CBS plant and member of the Illuminati would say that ;)

So Aria is the one standing between Stamets and Culber.

That is so weird to me that Star Trek has never had a non-binary character before. Or transgender for that matter... Both of which seem like something they would have easily thought of even back in the sixties. Although, I guess we didn't get the first black lead until 1993, and the first black female lead until 2017, so... So everything in it's time, I suppose.

That’s exactly what will happen. Maybe not here but in other places. It’s just like if you don’t like the character of Micheal Burnham, you get called “racist”. I’ve seen it happen a lot.

The only problem is the low number of episodes per season, which doesn't give all characters enough time.

The only thing that matters to me is that these characters are well written.

Look at the track record of how others were written.

Based on the high quotient of small universe syndrome in CBS trek, I' d bet big money on Dax btw.

Star Trek didn't even have any LGBTQ+ representation until 2016. First transgender and non-binary characters within five years of the first gay character is actually comparatively progressive.
