Two parter, maybe? (crossing my fingers)
That would explain why they moved episode 9 up to before the break.

I was actually assuming the forest was the one on the ship were they were growing spores.
I'm kind of puzzled as to why there's anyone who still doubts his rather obvious "piece of shit" status.
I think he has been great so far and adds a lot to the show overall.Count me amongst the doubters.
^ Don't get me wrong, Lorca is a great character. He just happens to also be a gigantic asshole.
I reckon Kat's gonna die. No more intergalactic booty calls for Captain Lorca.
Definitely reason to mourn.
me tooCount me amongst the doubters.
I'm not sure I agree, though. Is he broken in some ways? Yes. Is he cut from the same cloth as our past virtuous sure-thing captains? No.
He doesn't take any shit and he understands how to get the job done.
I've actually found him to be a very tolerant leader (dealing with Stamets' insubordinate bs, giving Michael a second chance, tolerating Saru's very different approach to things, adopting Ash Tyler, etc). He generally keeps his head in a crisis. I haven't seen him be disrespectful to anyone.
He's got issues, no doubt. But I don't really think he's a giant asshole or villain. I think he's broken and he's begun his healing process.
I could be wrong and look like a fool at the end of all this, and thats ok...but I hope I'm right. I'm more interested in Lorca having a redemption / healing arc than Burnham. And I like Burnham. I just like Lorca more.

I hope he doesn't care for them too much. He cared for his previous crew into oblivion.I agree with you. Considering Lorca was willing to hand over Discovery to Mudd under the agreement that the crew be spared he's clearly not a villain or evil. It also confirmed for me that Lorca was prevented from dying with his crew on the Buran against his will and he's living with the guilt and shame of this.
I found his attitude toward the space whale pretty refreshing. Lorca found the whole situation mundane and annoying, but respected his crew enough to allow their request to bring it aboard, study it and relocate it. Lorca is a soldier, so his command style is a bit rough compared to Picard the Diplomat or Janeway the Scientist, but i think he genuinely cares for his crew.
Where's the disagreement? That's WHY he's an asshole. Or rather, that's how the loss of the Buran (possibly) turned him into a giant asshole. Not everyone bounces back from a loss like that. Sisko could have (and in fact DID). Kirk definitely could have. Even Picard picked himself up after the loss of the Stargazer eventually.I'm not sure I agree, though. Is he broken in some ways? Yes. He's an asshole, that doesn't make him evil. By definition, the asshole boss is the guy whose only guiding principal is "Whatever works for me, that's the law." He hasn't been overly disrespectful to Stamets, for the most part, but that's only because Stamets - and everyone else - knows better than to cross him.I've actually found him to be a very tolerant leader (dealing with Stamets' insubordinate bs, giving Michael a second chance, tolerating Saru's very different approach to things, adopting Ash Tyler, etc). In the mean time, he's a giant asshole. Maybe he'll transform into something later on... maybe he'll finally become a hero, or maybe he'll become a villain. Or maybe he'll get one last taste of redemption at the moment of his death. Either way, he's one of the most interesting characters Star Trek has ever had. He's got issues, no doubt.
